Hello again all! After my profanity laced tirade about Holtz and company earlier, I'm back to my normal self. You guys have seen me on here for a couple of years, and by now you know that I'm pretty darn pessimistic when it comes to football. I've got to take a different turn here, and explain in short, simple terms why Oregon and their supposed high powered offense doesn't scare me a single bit.
It's all in the numbers, plain and simple. Here's a few stats for you:
COMBINED RECORD OF TEAMS ON OREGON'S SCHEDULE: 63-81
COMBINED RECORD OF TEAMS ON AUBURN'S SCHEDULE: 83-61
OREGON HAS 1 WIN OVER A TEAM THAT FINISHED THE YEAR RANKED IN THE TOP 25
AUBURN HAS 6 WINS OVER TEAMS THAT FINISHED THE YEAR RANKED IN THE TOP 25
OREGON HAS 3 WINS OVER TEAMS THAT FINISHED THE YEAR WITH A WINNING RECORD
AUBURN HAS 7 WINS OVER TEAMS THAT FINISHED THE YEAR WITH A WINNING RECORD
As they say, the proof is in the pudding. Oregon is averaging a crapton of points a game. Tons of offense, undefeated. I should be scared to death. I'm not. Why? Because they've done it on nearly a Boise State schedule. They've put up point totals in the 70's a lot. But against who? Nobody. On top of that, who's to say that Auburn wouldn't have done the same every week had we not had more class in the SEC and refuse to do that? How many times this year did Auburn put in backups and kneel down, while Oregon was throwing for the endzone up 5 touchdowns with 1 minute left in the 4th quarter?
We put up 60+ points on a BCS bound team, (Arky), put 56 points on a team that beat the defending national champions a few weeks ago, (who we also beat), and played in a MUCH tougher conference, all without intentionally running up the score. (I mean, come on, the last 2 drives against USC we ran the ball up the middle 8 times in a row and scored, only because they couldn't stop us. All we were doing was eating clock. We had 1 pass attempt, only to get a 1st down, and had our 2nd and 3rd stringers in on the last drive.)
Mr Negative Nancy here is the opposite of his usual self. I am not scared of Oregon. I literally think we can beat the crap out of them. The numbers support it. They haven't played anybody, we have. They run up the score, we don't. Oregon hasn't faced ANYBODY close to our caliber all year, with the exception of MAYBE Stanford. But honestly, Stanford doesn't hold a candle to us. While Andrew Luck is likely a better pro prospect than Cam Newton right now, this ain't the pros. This is college, and Cam and the Tigers is what the Ducks have to deal with. I honestly don't think they have a clue what they are in for, and I truly believe we can beat the living snot out of them.
War Eagle! Beat the quackers!!
