Growing up in Atlanta and having mostly UGA grads for friends, the UGA game is the biggest game of the year to me. I can't find a way to many games, but I always go to the UGA game, especially in Athens as a guest of my friends. As I stated in another post, I was treated very poorly by DOZENS of fans at the game, who thought it was better to show their ass, than their class, but then again I was expecting it.
I know everyone is upset this morning and believe me, I am CRUSHED, but lets fight the urge to go ranting about firing folks today. There was plenty of blame to go around yesterday and the problem yesterday was that UGA played focused and determined and we didn't.
Yes, we weren't prepared and we had breakdowns in several areas but I don't think you can place this solely at the coaches feet. Football is the ultimate team game. Every play has each player tasked with a specific repsonsibility, and if each player does their job perfectly, you score/ stop the other team. If they don't, the play breaks down at some point. Its when you have breakdowns in resposibility early in the play, that the play implodes.
Obviously we had breakdowns everywhere, especially on both lines of scrimmage. As a result we couldn't run and couldn't stop the run....you aren't going to win games when that happens and it effects every other facet of the game. Moseley looked horrible as a result. Dyer and McCalebb looked horrible, our secondary looked horrible, everybody looked bad. It was the epitome of a total team loss.
What we need to remember is that these kids need to grow some more and get some more experience. There is no excuse, youth or otherwise for the performance they gave yesteday, BUT unfortunately those things happen when you run into a good team and can't find a way to get into a groove yourself.
Our success in the future will depend on line play, offensive and defensive. We can fire Roof. Malzahn can leave. But unless the lines get stonger, faster, and smarter, Lombardi, Landry, Walsh and Belicheck wouln't be able to lead this team to Atlanta.
Yes we need desperate improvement and we took a BIG step backward yesterday and there is NO reason to feel confident against the Tide. However, there is reason to think that this team can grow in the future and contend. We've got a long way to go to get to that point and some real introspection is needed. But I do think Coach Chizik has recruited the kinds of players that will work hard to overcome their failings and hopefully we will get some decent re-inforcements next fall via the JUCO route to fil in tha GAPING hole we have in scholarships.
Thats a lot of ifs, and I know their isn't much room for optimism when even Sunshine Brett is wailing in despair, but trust me, small changes can make a big difference when everybody gets in sync and does their job. It probably won't happen against the Tide and we'll probably get violated again, but I think next year will be very different and we will be back on the rise.....provided we get the QB situation settled early and decisively.
Right now, I'm looking forward to our low level bowl game and hoping our guys can get it together and use that extra practice as a spring board into next year. We have one more year to take advantage of our National Championship in recruiting, so to keep the good recruits coming, we HAVE to turn it around and contend next year ..... and that's up to everyone that wears navy and orange!!
