I don't know if its common knowlege around the SEC yet, but yesteday afternoon UGA public relations released a statement that Richard Samuel was having ankle surgery and would be out 4-6 weeks......oh, and Isaiah Crowell, Carlton Thomas, and Ken Malcome would be suspended for this weeks game against cupcake New Mexico State for unspecified team rules violations.
That's fortunate timing isn't it? That your entire tailback contingent is getting suspended....right after the Florida game....oh and BEFORE the Auburn game?
That doesn't seem suspicious at all, does it?
Well, of course it does. That was the theme of afternoon talk radio yesterday in Atlanta, "What did Richt know and when did he know it?" Beating Florida was possibly the key to his season and probably his job.
UGA fans don't want to admit this, but if Richt had lost to Florida along with a chance at the SEC Championship, after being in perfect position to do so, it would be hard for AD Greg McGarity to stomach. As it is, he still has discipinary issues with his players after knowing how important it was that they keep their noses clean this season.
I mean, how do ALL of your tailbacks get suspended?
Looks like the partying by the backfield members has been overdone a little. Of course thats speculation on my part.....and about 8 of 10 SEC football fans.
Crowell is certainly not starting out his career well in Athens, with rumors that he is not a good student, has been confrontational with his tutors, got held out a quarter against Vandy for disciplinary action (really? A quarter? ... please) and now he is suspended for a game. Crowell looks like he is on the Ealey/King trail to eventual dismissal if he doesn't clean up his act. One has to wonder if he even understands what is at stake. And again, that's a problem if you are UGA fan.
While this story in general doesn't really generate much interest to me, and it isn't THAT big of a deal, it makes me wonder what Georgia fan would say if this was happening to us, given the same fortunate timing. They would of course savage Chizik for not taking repsonsibility. being evasive of the media and Auburn in general as corrupt cheaters.
You are hearing nothing from Richt on the matter ...
Which is not surprising to me, but the fact that the media isn't pressing for more info is. I mean, after the hypocrisy shown by their embarrassing display of sportsmanship against Vanderbilt, of all teams, UGA fan is already clamoring to poo poo this story as "nothing to see here, move along".
But given Richt's history of lax discipline and players "just not getting it," you would be a fool not to wonder if there is more to this than meets the eye.
Richt has put a lot of eggs in the Crowell/ "Dream Team" basket; that if Crowell did something stupid enough to get suspended for Florida....and the Dawgs lost....well, that may have been the last straw. As is, something is definitely amiss....Richts history of disciplinary issues continue, and the "No tolerance" policy seems to be a thing of the past. Or at least until another 5* back signs up to tote the rock in Athens.
But you know what? That's fine, I hope they keep Richt A LONG, LONG TIME - Richt and UGA deserve each other.
