Former Auburn Coach Paul Nix's 1976 CWS Team will be honored Saturday at Plainsman Park. Nix was the most successful and longest tenured coach in the program's history.
Former Auburn Baseball Coach Paul Nix is a legend at Auburn having won over 500 games, three SEC Championships, six Division Championships, and taken two teams to the College World Series. He was named the SEC Coach of the year five times in his 22 year tenure on the Plains.
This Saturday Auburn will honor one of his greatest teams - the1976 College World Series Team - prior to the Auburn vs. South Carolina game.
Nix's Tigers set a school record that year for wins (37-15), and won the SEC Championship and the NCAA South Regional to advance to the College World Series.
Several players off of that team went on to play in the Major Leagues, including pitchers Joe Beckwith and Terry Leach, infielder-outfielder Dom Fucci and infielder Richie Howard. Beckwith and Leach would both go on to long MLB careers including several trips to the World Series.
When Coach Nix retired in 1984, his 217 SEC wins were the most by any conference coach and he still ranks among the top 10 in all time wins.
This year's team will host a reception for his 1976 team prior to Saturday's 3pm game at Plainsman Park. It's just too bad that Coach Nix will not be there. The great general of the diamond passed away in 2009.
