Auburn senior shortstop Lauren Guzman and outfielder Branndi Melero were named to the All-Southeastern Conference softball teams on Wednesday. Guzman was a Second Team selection while Melero was named to the All-Freshman Team.
Lauren holds the team-record for consecutive games played (228) since starting as a freshman in 2009. She leads Auburn with a .327 batting average, eight RBI’s and two home runs against top 25 teams. In addition, she is one of the toughest players in the nation to strike out, ranking 36th in the country.
Coach Tina Deese said she is also a big part of the Tiger defense,
“She has shined,” Deese said. “To me, even in the SEC, there’s no better set of hands than Guzman’s got ... when it comes to hands, the exchange and the accuracy of her arm — there’s no one in the conference, I don’t think, that can match her.”
Gusman is batting .352 in league games and will lead the Tigers Thursday against Eastern Division Champions Tennessee in the first round of the Southeastern Conference Softball Tournament in Tuscaloosa.
It is the second year in a row for the two teams to meet in the Tournament. The Volunteers won a squeaker in the quarter round last year 2-1 in Oxford, Mississippi.
The Tigers are set to take on the fifth-ranked Volunteers at Rhoades Stadium. Today’s game will be broadcast at 1:30 p.m. CST on ESPNU.
