Auburn 8-1, Georgia 4-7: DH split gives Tigers series win

Lauren Barnard

Auburn split the Saturday doubleheader to win a second straight SEC series.

Michael O'Neal went seven innings for Auburn (22-14, 5-10 SEC) and held the Bulldogs to four runs to clinch the series in the early game of the doubleheader. The Tigers collected just three hits in the second game, won by Georgia (13-24, 3-12 SEC).

O'Neal (7-2) had some early run support after Cullen Wacker hit his second homer of the year in the first, putting Auburn ahead, 2-0. Jordan Ebert's RBI single made it 3-0, extending his hit streak to 12 games. Georgia starter Sean McLaughlin (4-3), struggled during most of his 2 2/3 innings, allowing a fourth run on a bases loaded walk to Hunter Kelley on his last pitch. He gave up six hits, walked three and struck out only one.

O'Neal went into the eighth inning, allowing four runs and none until the fourth. With two outs in the fifth, Damek Tomscha and Ryan Tella put O'Neal well ahead with a solo homer and a two-run double that made it 7-1.

Two unearned runs in the seventh and one in the eighth helped force O'Neal out of the game, before Chase Williamson and Reid Carter finished up the night for the Tiger staff. Garrett Cooper picked up an RBI late to finish the scoring for game one.

In the late game, Auburn shuffled the line up a bit, starting Mitchell Self at shortstop in place of Dan Glevenyak.

Will Kendall (0-4), continuing his comeback from Tommy John surgery, was tagged early by the Bulldogs, being chased into a 7-1 lead by the fourth. Auburn's three hits of Jared Walsh (2-3) never put them in a place to comeback after falling behind early. The disappointing finish to the series didn't outshine the 25 hits Auburn bagged in the two wins this weekend.

Auburn goes to Samford on Tuesday night, and then to Mississippi State Friday for a showdown with the #16 Bulldogs.
