The first Auburn game I remember going to was the 1992 LSU game. I was 6 and Auburn won 30-28. I had been to games before this (88 Kansas, '91 Georgia Southern & Southern Miss) but this is the one I really remember and started a trend of my passion for the rivalry. I think what made this game stick out to me is as I was leaving the stadium riding my dad's shoulders shouting "War Eagle" a college aged guy gave me one of those plastic mini footballs that I played with forever.
The 94 game still ranks as the most exciting Auburn game I've ever been to. I don't remember the Earthquake game but by the time the Interception game came around I was All In before All In was a thing. After witnessing 22-14 against Alabama the year before my parents decided to get season tickets. The LSU game was the first time I hugged a stranger at a game. I didn't cry in 1988 after losing to LSU (ok maybe I did I was 2 so it was probably just because my older brother was crying) but the 1995 Whistle Game made me start to have a hatred for the Bayou Bengals.
In 1996 I was a scared 10 year old as I watched the smoke rising from what to me seemed like the ramp to the Southwest upper deck and then disappointed to see Auburn lose. Watching games in 98 and 2000 I slowly realized how much I wanted to beat LSU. In 2001 I watched Damon Duval fight an LSU band member.
In 2002 I was 16, my parents let me and a friend drive over from Georgia the Friday before the game and go to the Nappy Roots-3 Doors Down concert at Beard-Eaves. We slept in the back of my dad's truck with a camper shell on it. LSU was ranked in the top 10. Auburn was unranked coming off what was the last time Florida would beat Auburn. Before the game an LSU fan in our section bet me my shaker to his LSU cowboy hat that LSU would win. I refused because well I was dumb. But I saw he had made the bet with someone else as he threw it to them as he left the stadium in the 4th quarter. This was also the 1st time I ever rolled Toomer's Corner.
In 2004 I was a freshman at UGA but made the trip to Auburn to watch Courtney Taylor do what Courtney Taylor did. In 2005 I let lose a string of choice words towards John Vaughn only to remember that Death Valley does strange things to kickers. In 2006 I didn't attend the game, the first time I had missed an Auburn-LSU game in Auburn since 1989. I watched from Athens as Brock hit the receiver inside the 10. IN 2007 I watched Les Miles do crazy crazy things in a game Auburn coulda won. In 2008 I was in Auburn but stayed at the tailgate as Auburn lost another heartbreaker to LSU. I was in the stadium for 2010 as Cam sealed his Heisman with the run up the middle. But things changed after that.
In 2011 I joined edsbs and got to see that not all LSU fans are bad. They're a heck of a lot better than Alabama fans (including some of my relatives). Rooting for LSU to win it all for the first time (didn't root for them before in spite of ESSS EEE SEEE pride) in the Super Dome didn't feel bad at all. And last year watching Auburn fight it out from my usual spot in JHS it didn't feel bad to lose as a horrible team kept it close.
I want it to change, I wanna hate them again and go back to either breaking their hearts of having them break mine and not have that feeling with CLANGA. But I'll still root for LSU to win the West if Auburn can't.
