Observations from Game to Game on Sean White in 2015 - San Jose State University

John Reed-USA TODAY Sports

In the last fanpost we observed how White did in the Mississippi State game. He did ok and you could say pretty good for a first start for a red shirt freshman. Now we move on to his second starting game which was against SJSU. Does he show some improvement, is he about the same or is he worse? Let's watch...

Quick note: barring a really slow/easy workday as we move into the regular week these will probably start going out at the earliest in the early evening and I may not get some out until past midnight on some days. Just a heads up.

Observations:

- White being pretty accurate with the football once again.

- Poised and hanging in the pocket.

- Let down by his receivers on some potential big plays...

- White went downfield a good bit more this game or at least at a higher rate than last game it feels like.

- White shows some arm strength. On his long-balls it looks like the furthest he throws (at either 0:15 or 1:54) it is at least 42+ yards from where he's standing

- White does a better job avoiding sacks this game. Or it may have been more a factor of so few opportunities for sacks.

- 2:31 not sure if there was a miss-communication or what but that was pretty off. Sucks because Louis was 1 on 1 deep.

- 2:51 you may wanna slide, head to the sideline or just avoid the defender if you can next time White... Big hit there that looks like it was right on or close to the football. Good thing the fumble was recovered. Good run up to that point though.

- 3:59 hangs in the face of the blitz, takes the hit and delivers it to the receiver but dropped/broken up.

- White is pretty gritty but is a bit too willing to take hits to me if that makes sense?

- Of AU's 10 possessions 5 started in SJSU territory and 3 others started past AU's 35. As a result fewer opportunities for yardage for anyone on the offense to get yards and stats including White.

- Number of fumbles and potential fumbles by White concerning.

- If those disputed catches are caught by the AU receivers and that drop is not dropped then White is 9-10 with close to 200 yards and maybe even a couple of TDs...

- Limited number of passes for White but with how the running game was working and the short drives AU usually had to work with it makes sense that it worked out that way.

- Only 4 runs for White but he had an ok average of 4.5 ypc on them.

- Sacks
-- None

- Misses/drops on catchable balls
-- Please note: espn gives credit to the defender on 2 of these. My criteria on these however is that it is a catchable ball and the receiver didn't make the play. It is probably unfair but that's mostly how I did it I think in my other fanpost series so for consistency I'm doing the same here.
-- 0:15 - Can't tell if the defender swatted it or not, either way an opportunity lost. - Yards missed: 36-38
-- 1:54 - Wow.... - Yards missed: 42+ at least... Not sure if he could have made the end zone or not.
-- 3:59 - Not sure if that was the receiver not securing the catch, the defender making a great play or both. - Yards missed: about 8 (plus a 1st down)
-- Approximate yards missed: 86+ or so (maybe even more).
-- 3 1st downs missed and maybe 1 or 2 TDs potentially.

Overall:

This game is a bit harder to get a feel. Due to how the game ended up developing White ended up only throwing 10 passes total which is fairly typical of Malzahn/Lashlee in cases where the running game is doing more than enough and the pass isn't needed much. In addition with positives there were also some negatives. If I had to go one way or another I'd say White improved at least with his throwing ability and his running of the offense. Consider:

- He was really off on only 1 throw.
- His stats could have been a good bit better if all the catchable balls he threw had been caught. To be specific potentially 9-10 for 190+ yards and maybe even a TD or 2.
- He showed more arm strength on down the field throws.
- He took no sacks.
- Of AU's offensive possessions only 2 ended in punts and 1 of those could have been extended if the receiver came down with the ball.

White was not perfect however. He took a few hits that perhaps he should have avoided, threw no TDs still and a new problem came up by White fumbling a few times. In fairness none of those fumbles were lost but near turnovers like that are not good.

Overall White's opportunities were somewhat limited with how the game flowed and while he was fairly solid in what opportunities he did have those were limited by some misses by his receivers. As far as his running game it was "ok" but those fumbles were not a good look.

Grade:

This one is hard to grade... It's White's 2nd start so he doesn't get as much leeway and he did improve in some ways this game. His receivers also let him down a few times on some potentially big plays with about 86+ yards lost and maybe a couple of TDs missed as well. At the same time those fumbles, although not lost, were a bad look.

In the end we won this game, the offense under White only had 2 punts in 10 possessions with no actual turnovers and while White did have some fumbles he was only off on 1 pass so I'll give him a "B".

We're all just trying to have a good time here. Don't be a jerk, and we won't have a problem with you. War Eagle!
