A day after opening the season with a shutout win, Auburn was on the other end of a blanking, falling 1-0 to Ohio State on Day 2 of the Snowbird Classic. The Tigers managed just five hits against the Buckeyes.
Ohio State (2-0) took care of all the scoring in the fourth inning. Auburn starter Michael O'Neal walked Buckeyes third baseman Jacob Bosiokovic and right fielder Pat Porter to start the bottom half of the inning. Designated hitter Josh Desze stepped up and singled through the left side on a 2-1 pitch, driving in Bosiokovic. O'Neal got out of the inning by inducing a double play for the first two outs, following that up with a ground out to first baseman Keegan Thompson.
For the second day in a row, Auburn (1-1) was without an extra-base hit, and no Tiger singled more than once. Offensive execution, which was a strength against Indiana State, was a let down on Saturday. Four times they put two men on base in an inning without anything to show. Two sacrifice bunt attempts resulted in the lead runner being forced out at third base, another bunt was popped up and a botched hit and run ended with Anfernee Grier thrown out at home. After the game, head coach Sunny Golloway, who wants to win with small ball, was obviously upset.
"We should have been able to exploit and drag the ball all day long," Golloway said. "They didn't budge [the third baseman]. They expected the pitcher to go all the way over and pick it up. Twice he was able to throw it to third base. All you have to do is bunt the ball with conviction down the third-base line. We tried to exploit that twice and bunted the ball to the pitcher. We did it twice. We popped one up in a crucial situation."
While the Tigers' bats left much to be desired, pitching was once again solid. O'Neal took a hard-luck loss, throwing six innings and allowing the one run on four hits and two walks, and he struck out two. Trey Cochran-Gill pitched the final two innings and gave up two hits and a walk, striking out one. Auburn didn't commit an error in the field.
Ohio State's Ryan Riga pitched six shutout innings, allowing four hits and a walk wile striking out three to earn the win. Trey Dempsy two walks over the final two innings to pick up the save.
The Tigers return to action Sunday for their final game of the Snowbird Classic. Freshman right-hander Keegan Thompson will make his first start on the mound against UConn, and the Huskies will counter with southpaw Brian Ward. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m. CT.
