Alabama State erupted for nine runs in the final four innings, ruining Auburn's home opener at Plainsman Park Wednesday afternoon. The Hornets defeated the Tigers, 9-3. It was State's first win over Auburn in program history.
After five scoreless innings, Alabama State (4-1) drew first blood with three runs in the top of the sixth. Auburn starter Justin Camp gave up a walk and two singles to load the bases, and he couldn't make a play on a Cesar Rivera squeeze bunt to the right side, allowing a run to score without recording an out. After Waldyvan Estrada popped out to Damon Haecker at second base, Emmanuel Marrero bunted over the head of charging first baseman Keegan Thompson, reaching safely and driving in another run. After striking out Dillon Cooper, Camp walked Branden Castro to bring in another run.
Auburn (2-2) got one back in the bottom of sixth when right fielder Anfernee Grier led off with a double -- the Tigers' first extra-base hit of the year -- and eventually came around on a sacrifice fly from center fielder Ryan Tella. The Hornets extended their lead back to three when Rivera hit into a one-out fielder's choice with the bases loaded, scoring E. Muniz.
The Tigers looked like they might take over momentum in the bottom of the seventh. After designated hitter Daniel Robert led off with a pop out, third basemen Damek Tomscha and pinch hitter JJ Shaffer were both hit by pitches. Catcher Blake Austin, one of the team captains, hammered a 3-2 pitch into the left field gap for a double, driving in two and cutting the deficit to 4-3. Austin advanced to third on a Haecker single to right, but the inning ended with a Grief pop out and a ground out by shortstop Dan Glevenyak.
What momentum Auburn had, Alabama State seized it immediately. Marrero hit the first pitch of the the eighth off the top of the right field wall for a triple. Three more hits and two errors later, the Hornets scored five runs to take a commanding 9-3 lead. In their final six outs, the Tigers could manage only a walk from Robert. They put together just five hits on the afternoon.
Drake Hloska picked up the win for Alabama State, pitching one scoreless inning in relief and allowing a hit and two walks. Camp suffered the loss, allowing three earned runs on five hits and three walks in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out eight.
Auburn will try to bounce back this weekend when it hosts the Tiger Classic, facing Arkansas Pine-Bluff, Cal and East Tennessee State. Senior righty Dillon Ortman will take the mound Friday night against the Golden Lions. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. CT.
