Keegan Thompson pitched 8 1/3 strong innings, but Auburn's inability to muster much offense allowed East Tennessee State to rally for a 3-2 win victory in 10 innings Sunday afternoon at Plainsman Park. The Buccaneers scored all three runs after the sixth inning.
Thompson allowed two runs -- one earned -- on four hits, and he struck out five without allowing a walk. Holding a 2-1 lead in the top of the ninth, an error by shortstop Dan Glevenyak on a ground ball allowed ETSU right fielder Jeremy Taylor to reach second base. Center fielder Dylan Tritsch moved Taylor to third with a sacrifice bunt, and closer Terrance Dedrick came on in relief of Thompson. With one out and the infield in, left fielder Clinton Freeman singled past second base, tying the game.
Dedrick stayed in for the top of the 10th and induced a leadoff ground out from shortstop Chris Riopedre. Third baseman Chris Cook came up and hit a line drive to left field, and Hunter Kelley, who replaced J.J. Shaffer, missed the ball on an ill-advised dive, allowing Cook to reach third. The play was ruled a triple. One batter later, second baseman Trey York gave ETSU the lead with a sac fly to right.
Auburn (3-4) did all of its damage on the scoreboard in the fourth inning. After Damon Haecker and Jackson Burgreen reached on an infield single and walk, respectively, third baseman Blake Austin singled to left, but Haecker was cut down at home for the second out of the inning. Catcher Blake Logan came up and doubled off the glove of Freeman in left center, driving in Burgreen and Austin.
Soft-tossing submariner Will Chesney (1-0), who threw a majority of his pitches in the mid-70s, struck out three in 2 1/3 perfect innings to pick up the win for the Buccaneers (4-3). Dedrick (0-1) was saddled with the loss, giving up one run on two hits in 1 2/3 innings.
It was another game that featured a frustrating offensive output for Sunny Golloway's team. The Tigers have scored 18 runs in seven games this year, averaging just 2.6 per contest. They've been held to three or fewer in five outings.
Auburn returns to action Tuesday afternoon for a 3 p.m. game against Alabama A&M. Justin Camp should be on the mound for the Tigers.
