If there's one trend that has been very noticeable for Auburn when it comes to defensive ends over the last few cycles, it's height. Auburn has signed some tall DEs. Nick Coe is another one who fits that mold at 6'5.5, 269 lbs.
Coe committed to the Tigers during his official visit on the day of the Iron Bowl. He was a nice surprise that morning on what turned out to be a very frustrating day for Auburn fans. He's a composite four star and 247Sports rates him as the #4 Strong Side Defensive End in the nation, #3 overall recruit in the state of North Carolina.
I didn't originally do a commitment article on Coe, since it happened while I was already tailgating and I somehow forgot to get around to it in the following week. There was the possibility he would take some other visits near the end of the recruiting process - and Alabama offered him in mid-December - but wrestling obligations kept him from taking part in any more visits, which was a definite plus for Auburn.
Speaking of that wrestling, Coe is a state champion in North Carolina on the mat. That's a type of skill that can definitely translate into being a handful for offensive linemen to deal with as he fights past them for the quarterback. Given his size, you have to imagine that quickness and the moves associated with it mean he could be a standout pass rusher. His highlights definitely give you something to look forward to.
I don't know where Coe will end up on the 2016 depth chart. With Lawson returning, Cowart as a Sophomore, Paul James on board, and Gimel President showing signs of stepping up last year, he may be destined for a redshirt. If Auburn struggles in the pass rush early, though, it's not hard to see him getting onto the field. He definitely looks like someone who can provide Auburn with a great pass rushing threat going forward, though.
War Eagle, Nick!
