Going into this weekend, someone asked if I expected a sweep. I said that without Joseph Gonzalez, the offense would have to be on point for that to happen because of Lipscomb’s ability to bash the ball with the middle of their lineup. College baseball is a different animal from any other college sport. This isn’t the name game football is. Heck, it isn’t the name game basketball is. Every now and then you will get an Old Dominion beat a Virginia Tech in Football. You once in a blue moon get a UMBC beat a Virginia. In College Baseball, however, that’s a Tuesday…or a Friday and Saturday (Sup, FSU! How are those Eagles of Florida Gulf Coast?). This Lipscomb squad was a 7th inning that got away from them, away from sweeping Notre Dame to start the year. Yeah, the Notre Dame team that Ol’ Yeller’ed Tennessee last year before heading to Omaha. This is a good ball club and Mississippi State should be put on notice for this weekend and make sure that the Bulldogs aren’t looking ahead to the start of SEC play and the Kentucky Wildcats.

Back to this weekend first though. The Tigers decided to mix up the starting rotation with Gonzo held out one more weekend for tightness in his shoulder (the MRI this past week showed no damage and no need for any type of surgery, just treatment and rest, so very good news), so the Tigers went with Tanner Bauman Friday, Christian Herberholz on Saturday and Zach Crotchfelt on Sunday. Everything went to plan on Friday night as the Tigers went strong on the mound to get the first victory. Bauman went 3.2 giving up a run on 4 hits with 5 Ks and a walk before giving way to John Armstrong who picked up yet another win, his 3rd of the season. This time, Armstrong went 2.1 innings giving up just a run with two hits and threw in 4 Ks for good measure. Chase Allsup finished it off to get his first save of the season going a strong 3 innings of work giving up just a run on a hit with 2 walks and 5 Ks. On the offensive side, it was Kason Howell’s night. The 5th year senior starter went 3-for-5 with 3 doubles, a run scored and 2 RBIs. That first double of the evening also ended up being Kason’s 200th hit as an Auburn Tiger. No one deserved to have a night like this more than Kason who has been a rock for the Auburn outfield since he set foot on campus and has very rarely missed a pitch since he did. Standing ovation to the young man for the hard work and leadership he has put in to the program.

Saturday might have been the game of the series, which is the worst part of the weekend because there was no TV so, I don’t have very man highlights to go along with this. Pitching was optional for both sides as both offenses combined for 33 hits and 23 runs on the day. There are too many stats to relay to you on the Auburn side of things, but Cole Foster had a big day, Bryson Ware did what he has done all year and bashed the ball, Chris Stanfield had an very nice day. However, I think Ware deserves a little bit of the spotlight that was dominated by what happened in the 9th. Ware hit a 2 run bomb that scored the eventual hero of the night Ike Irish to tie things up at 11 as we went to the 9th inning. From there it was all Ike and the offense. The Tigers loaded the bases with 1 out to set the stage for the Freshman.

That gave the Tigers the series win for the 3rd series this season and again gave Auburn the opportunity to get the first sweep of the year.

Sunday was the exact opposite of the previous two days as it was a pitchers duel for a majority of the day. Zach Crotchfelt turned in a solid 4 innings but was the victim of a questionable at best overturn of a pickoff at 1st and then the next pitch was a home run to put the Tigers down 2-0. Auburn was able to get one of those runs back in the 5th to make it a 2-1 ballgame going to the 6th. The Bisons however got it right back in the top half to push it back to a 3-1 lead. On the mound, Hayden Murphy and Parker Carlson did a solid job to combine for 2 innings of work to relieve Crotchfelt and limited the Lipscomb bats to just a run over those 2 innings with 3 hits, a walk and a strike out. John Armstrong followed and completely shut them down from there going 3 innings with 2 Ks and gave the Auburn offense time to figure out the Lipscomb starter Braydon Tucker who was masterful in his 7 innings of work. The offense never did figure out Tucker who was lifted after 7 innings of work and throwing 106 pitches on the day. That was the opening the offense need however. After 2 quick outs of Howell and Foster, Justin Kirby got a double down the line and Ike Irish earned a 4 pitch walk, which set the stage for that man Bryson Ware.

From there John Armstrong would snuff out any hope the Bisons had to secure the series sweep. That means that during the time Joseph Gonzalez, Auburn ace on the pitching staff, was allowed to sit out and rest the should, Auburn went 5-0-1 on those weekends. Some how, some way, this team found a way to get the job done. It speaks to the talent, the coaching and the leadership this team has and will do nothing but help down the road when things get tough. A solid weekend all the way around to be sure.

ON DECK

A double busy week for the Tigers as they will get a 5 game schedule this week. First, Auburn hosts former player Casey Dunn and the UAB Blazers at Plainsman Park on Tuesday with a 6pm start and that will be on the SECN+. From there it’s a quick trip to Jacksonville to take on the Gamecocks at 6pm on Wednesday before returning back home for a weekend set with last year’s Auburn Regional 4 seed, SE Louisiana. Game times for those are 6 pm Friday, 2pm on Saturday and 1 pm on Sunday. Saturday and Sunday will be on the Network+ and Friday will be a radio only experience so plan your weekend accordingly!

It was supposed to look different than it did. Auburn was supposed to bat first. There we supposed to be fewer Auburn fans, though I know the Southern California Auburn Club would have been there in force. Joseph Gonzalez was supposed to do his thing and shut down the Trojans in Game Two of the series. However, as baseball normally ends up, what was supposed to happen, didn’t. Auburn would be able to host the series against a rebuilding USC ball club due to the first Blizzard Warning in Southern California since the 80s but would have to do so without their ace as he sat this weekend as a precaution due to some shoulder soreness.

As far as the series goes, it was an well matched series on both sides of the ball for the Tigers and showed that the Trojans are headed in the right direction. On Friday, Auburn’s offense was held at bay for the most part with USC’s first wave of Arms. Tyler Stromsborg was excellent for 3 innings until the Tigers were able to get a pair of 2 run doubles from Cole Foster and Bobby Peirce to quickly erase a Trojan 1-0 lead. In the end, that would be enough as the teams would trade runs for the Auburn win. Chase Allsup was able to work his way out of a bases loaded jam with no outs in the 3rd and limited damage to just a run across in the 4th when he gave way to John Armstrong would was the good luck winner, throwing 2 pitches and getting the win. Tanner Bauman continued his hot start, going 3.2 innings, giving up two runs on a hit with 3 BB and 3 Ks on the day. Will Cannon got the first save of his weekend going 1.1 surrendering 2 hits with a walk and a strikeout.

Saturday, with Joseph Gonzales taking a precautionary weekend off to rest a sore shoulder, the Tigers needed the offense to show up in a big way. For the first 3 innings, it looked like Jaden Agassi, yes…Andre and Steffi Graf’s son, and the Trojans just had Auburn’s number as the Tigers could only muster a hit and needed a walk and a HBP to get to a runner to second base. By that time, the Trojans had touched up Christian Herberholz for 3 runs, including a ‘throw it around the infield’ play that allowed a Trojan to go up 3-0 going to the 4th. That’s when the fun began. From the 4th inning on, Auburn’s offense combined for 12 runs on 13 hits to put away the Trojans and the series. On the mound, Tommy Vail continued to prove he can be a bridge guy, going 1.2 innings, giving up a hit with 2 walks and 2 strike outs. John Armstrong came back in to get the win, going more than his 2 pitches the day prior, 1.2 innings with 3 runs surrendered with a hit, 3 walks and a strikeout. Once again Will Cannon cam on for the Save after USC had cut the Auburn lead down to 2 runs.

Sunday was the odd day and it was supposed to be from the beginning. Auburn would need to piece together an effort from the pitching staff that had been over taxed from an arms stand point, while also getting a solid effort from the offense. Chase Isbell was called on to start the effort and that didn’t start off well as USC opened up for 4 runs in the first 4 batters (2-2 run homers), and chased Isbell before he could record an out. Zach Crotchfelt came in relief and did well for just his second appearance in college ball, going 3.2 innings giving up 4 runs on 4 hits with 2 walks and 3 strike outs. After that flurry to start, it was all Auburn as the Tigers over took USC and was able to grab an 8-4 lead after 3 innings. From then on, the teams would trade 4 run cards until the final finish of 12-12 after 9 due to USC needing to get to Atlanta and catch their flight back to So Cal.

It was a series that almost wasn’t, but in the end, it really couldn’t have gone much better for Auburn. There was confidence built both on the mound and at the plate while the Tigers saw some of those normal stars, Cole Foster, Nate LaRue and Bobby Peirce, all get back to their normal of driving in runs and causing havoc on the base pads. And they got to do all of this in front of the home crowd.

ON DECK

The Tigers home stand continues this week as Auburn plays host to Florida A&M on Wednesday for a 6 PM first pitch. This weekend the Tigers will host a hot Lipscomb squad who has series wins over Notre Dame and Illinois-Chicago so far this season. Friday and Sunday will be on the SEC Network+ with 6 PM and 1 PM start times for those matchups. Saturday’s game will be a 2 PM, an hour after Senior Day gets underway over at Neville Arena against Tennessee for the basketball folks, so parking will be at a premium.

The new look Auburn Tigers took care of business on the weekend, keeping a hot Indiana offense down for all but Sunday to take the opening series of the year two games to one. “We really wanted them to get out of town before they started swinging it because of all our preparation and video of seven of those nine returners that we talked about beforehand,” head coach Butch Thompson said Sunday. Through 18 innings, Tiger pitching held the Hoosiers to just 5 runs on 9 hits with 7 walks. Contrast that with Sunday where Indiana had 5 runs after the first 12 batters of the day.

Friday night, the Tigers strung together a nice weave of starter Chase Allsup, Tanner Bauman, John Armstrong and Will Cannon to combine to give up just 4 runs on 5 hits with 4 walks and 12 strikeouts to keep Indiana at bay.

Saturday saw much of the same with even greater effect. Joseph Gonzalez looked every part of the ace, going 5 innings and giving up just 2 hits on the day while striking out a lone Hoosier batter. Following the strike out and a lone fly out, the rest of the Indiana batter were retired via the ground out for Gonzo. Tommy Sheehan and Chase Isbell were able to bridge things to get to Tommy Vail who was flawless in two innings of work. With a strike out to his credit, Vail had Hoosier batters fly out the rest of his innings of work to give the Tigers their second win of the season.

Sunday was a bit of a struggle as mentioned above, except for Zach Crotchfelt who was able to quiet things down, going 3.2 innings of work with four Ks, a walk and 3 hits. The 2 runs credited to him were after he left the game with one out and 2 on.

The weekend at the plate for the Tigers went with the same curve as the pitching staff. Taking charge at the dish for Auburn was the 3rd baseman Bryson Ware who went 7-12 on the weekend with 3 doubles and 2 RBIs. Right behind Ware was freshman sensation Ike Irish, who was just a tick behind Ware, going 6-12 with 3 doubles and 3 RBIs. The power award for the weekend goes to transfer Justin Kirby, who had 2 no doubters and 6 walks to keep his overall average down at .250 (2-8). Don’t feel bad for Justin though, he is slugging at 1.000, so he’s got that going for him.

ON DECK

Next up for the Tigers is a quick trip up to Huntsville to take on North Alabama before jumping on a jet and heading to LA to take on Southern Cal in a big non-conference series. The Trojans opened the season with a sweep of Marist (8-6, 17-4, 12-2) and will host UC-Irvine tomorrow night before hosting the Tigers. Game times this weekend are 8:30 on Friday and Saturday and a 2 pm match up on Sunday. Look to see if the Tigers keep Allsup and Gonzo in their spots but throw Crotchfelt in as the starter on Sunday. As far as the regular line up, I would think the Tigers feel pretty good with their Opening Day lineup, as Ware and Irish are getting on and driving people in and if Kirby continues to tear the cover off the ball, the offense can be dangerous. The real key will be getting bats like Howell, LaRue, Foster and Peirce to come alive and support the hot offense already there. The other key to watch this weekend is the length of the starters and the support behind them. Auburn seems to have found two guys they can trust on the back end with Cannon and Vail, now can they get the bridge guys to get them from starters to the finish line.

Okay, Bruce, we need to step it up a bit.

Auburn hasn’t been able to close things out lately. The Tigers have lost five of six, with close calls abounding. Auburn erased a big deficit against West Virginia on the road, hung in with top five teams in Tennessee and Alabama (leading the Tide down the stretch), and came up short in College Station. At 17-8, you’re not really in the danger zone yet, but you can’t afford to make any mistakes before heading to Lexington in a couple weeks.

Now, it’s Missouri at home. The gold and black Tigers haven’t won on the Plains since 2014, but that’s of little consequence. This is a pretty solid team that’s already gone through the toughest portion of its schedule and may be in position for a top four seed in the SEC Tournament if things shake out the right way.

If you remember last season, Auburn got up to #1 in the rankings, and then nearly pooped its pants against this Mizzou team in CoMo. However, they got the win, but Missouri’s danger element stays prevalent in our minds.

THE OPPONENT

The Tigers are 19-6 on the year, and they’re on the opposite trajectory from Auburn, having won five of six. That includes a buzzer beater win over Tennessee over the weekend, and they can still boast earlier double-digit victories over Kentucky and Iowa State from recent weeks to show that they’re one of the best offensive teams in the country.

You can see that they’re 12th in the country in scoring, and 25th in field goal percentage. They’re going to hit shots, they’re going to hit threes, but Auburn can grab a distinct advantage with the Tigers not being a good rebounding team. Like, at all. Missouri is next-to-last in the land in defensive rebounding, so Auburn’s size in the middle should be able to win some battles and create second chance opportunities.

Of course, this isn’t anything new after Devan Cambridge grabbed 9 offensive boards in last year’s meeting, but that was a Cuonzo team. New head coach Dennis Gates has this offense cooking, and he’ll lean on the star from last season in Kobe Brown. You’ll remember Brown as the Huntsville native who ended up going far away, and now he’s averaging 16.5 ppg and coming home essentially. He’s hitting 57% from the floor and 46% from three, so, thanks for that.

Aside Brown, D’Moi Hodge, a transfer from Cleveland State, is picking up 14.1 ppg as a 6’4 guard, along with double digit outputs from DeAndre Gholston at 10.5 ppg.

PREDICTION

Something has to give at a certain point for Auburn. While they haven’t been able to get over the hump recently, they’ve been close to beating some really good teams and just haven’t put it together toward the end. Missouri isn’t on the level of an Alabama, and while the Jungle might not be quite as raucous, it’ll still be a good atmosphere. I like Johni Broome’s inside presence tonight against a very poor rebounding team, and I think the Tigers can get a another big performance from the foul line against a team that commits quite a few fouls.

Oh boy, here we go. It’s the situation where Auburn has been working to put things together and make something happen, even if we haven’t seen the results yet.

The Tigers have lost four of five, true. However, Three of those losses were on the road, including slim losses to two of the top three teams in the SEC, and another to a BIG 12 team at their place. Now, we’re back at home, for College Gameday, with all eyes on this game, and those guys coming in to play.

Auburn has been playing a different level of basketball, raising the bar after weeks of offensive struggles. The Tigers were able to keep up in Morgantown and College Station, and both defenses ruled the day in Knoxville, but Auburn has lost close contests on the road. Now we’re back home.

Unfortunately, we may be playing the best and most dangerous team on the schedule in Alabama. It’s truly awful that they’re this good this year, and boast one of the best players in the land in Brandon Miller. He’s a guy who can truly go off for 30 points on any night, but they’ve got great complements for him all around the squad.

THE OPPONENT

It really does start with Miller, who averages 19.0 ppg, and who will thankfully only be playing one season in Tuscaloosa, but there are other guys that can bust it open every time out.

Mark Sears, the Ohio transfer, provides a steady presence and gives 13.9 ppg, while Noah Clowney’s a freshman averaging double digits as well. Alabama returns Charles Bediako in the middle, and Jaden Bradley replaces Jaden Shackelford at the point. Nate Oats has a type when it comes to names, I guess.

If basketball is rebounding and shooting, then Alabama does it well.

They’re first in defensive rebounding, first in total rebounding, sixth in points scored, and they’ll just chuck up threes like crazy as well. Of the three losses, all by double digits, there are some things that opponents were able to do to slow down the Tide.

Brandon Miller’s going to get his points for the most part, much like us with Jabari Smith last year. You’ve got to shut down the other guys to make them one-dimensional. Noah Clowney seems to be the glue guy, and if you slow him down, you can let Miller go off but that’s all they’ve got. Not letting him and Sears work seems to disrupt their attack more than anything else, and we saw the last time Alabama played a good team on the road. They fell hard.

Oklahoma jumped up early and didn’t look back, with Alabama’s defense never finding an answer. They’ve had trouble with versatile big guys like Adamo Sanogo and Drew Timme (both elites), but Johni Broome could give them some trouble too.

PREDICTION

It’s really tough to pick us here, but it’s at Neville, with Gameday, and we’re itching for a win. This is just the situation that Bruce Pearl loves, and I think the atmosphere holds on enough for Auburn to do it today. We probably take our lumps in a couple weeks at their place after this, but no worries. Big game from Broome, and Miller gets 25, but there’s only one other player in double figures for Bama.

Auburn went 1-1 last week, and now enters a week that looks equally as tough on paper, but possible more attainable.

The Tigers will be facing off against Texas A&M tonight in a revenge game after the Aggies broke the Neville Arena winning streak a couple weeks ago. Then on Saturday, College Gameday is in town for Auburn and Alabama on the Plains.

A&M really controlled things two weeks ago, with Auburn posting a tepid offensive performance at home and being unable to control Tyrece Radford, who hit a career high with 30 points. Everything fell for the Aggies, and Auburn couldn’t hit a three (just 3-16), while also allowing 20-24 from the line for A&M as well.

Alas, we lost the winning streak, but maybe these are the cuts that become tough scars at the end of the season. It seems like Auburn is starting to figure some things out — the offense against Georgia, the defense against Tennessee — and have yet to put it all together for a full game. Doing that on the road on a short turnaround will be tough, but maybe Bruce has his guys fired up after the almost that they accomplished on Saturday in holding the nation’s #2 team to just 46 points.

THE OPPONENT

We know these guys, and after two consecutive matchups where Tyrece Radford has exploded, the name of the game is stopping him. He went for 30 last time out, including an 11-12 mark from the line and 9 rebounds. Wade Taylor hit 3-5 threes for most of his damage, but Auburn needs to figure out a way to slow those guards down. If they combine for 45 points again, we’ll lose again.

The good news is that nobody else really had a big impact. Julius Marble went 4-7 for 9 points, but we’ll take that if we cut the Radford/Taylor effort in half. What we really saw last time out was Wendell Green and Johni Broome both getting their usual, but neither Jaylin Williams nor Allen Flanigan hitting that double-digit mark we’d come to expect over the previous few games. Auburn really did just have a horrible game that you come to expect every once in awhile in this sport. Either way, slow down the Aggie guards and we’ll have a good chance.

PREDICTION

However, for us to have a good chance, our guards also need to be way better. Wendell got hassled big time last time out against these guys, and we didn’t get any whistles blown on some rough play in Auburn. Chances are we won’t get the whistles tonight either on the road. Thankfully, this is fresh in our minds, and we know what to expect from their strategy, and Bruce has all the time in the world to react. If we’re able to duplicate the defensive effort from Saturday, we win this game pretty easily. Thing is, it’s going to have to fall on Wendell to make this game clean and run a smooth offense for Auburn. I think we see it, and it leads into a huge day on Saturday back at home.
