Anyone else getting that deja-vu feeling all over again with so many top teams going down this past weekend? Is it 2007 again? #1, #3, and #4 all fall--two of them to major underdogs. Nor does any team know how to cover a spread anymore. (Especially us) If that's the way it's going to be, I'm going to quit betting on games and put all my money in mortgage-backed securities.
Just who do you think is going to be cast as the villain this week in the ESPN production of The Tigers of Wrath? Let's see. Poor little Vandy has never had Game Day at their place and they are leading the conference for the first time since the days of the SIAA. Auburn is a sluggish bore who hasn't let the heroes win a game against them since the Eisenhower administration. Make no mistake. Auburn will be the tall Phillistine with the big 'G' on his helmet. If CBS had the game again with Danielson and Lundquist, I'd know we were being set up, but maybe we'll get some love out of the ESPN announcing booth that we certainly won't see from Moe, Larry, and Corso.
Who would have thunk it--that three conference games in, we'd have our best offensive output against LSU? Our rushing and passing numbers are looking like a graph of last week's Dow Jones. Against MSU, we get a balance of rushing and passing, but no points. With LSU, passing goes up dramatically, but rushing falls off. Last week, we get neither. Who would have also thought that at this point in the season that platooning QBs might be the most attractive option...
Those crazy polls! #3 Georgia loses to #8 Alabama and falls to 11th in the AP. #1 USC and #4 Florida fall to nobodies and only drop to 9th and 12th, respectively--still ahead of us, mind you, which I'm not uncomfortable with. That's the way the polls have been going the last few years --it's like jury nullification in our legal system. Sure they lost, but we don't care. We still think they're good enough. LSU benefitted from that last year. I guess I can live with it until we get a playoff in a few years, as long as the SEC champ has virtually a guaranteed slot in the BCS championship game...
And finally...
An Open Letter to the Georgia Bulldogs
Dear Dogs:
Thanks for hosting College Game Day at your house the week after we threw it. We gotta try to keep SEC appearances up. Too bad you didn't invite yourself. How are you a Kno-Shon no-show to your own party? It could have been worse, though. You could have been Florida...
How did that whole blank-out black-out work for you? It kinda was like a funeral, huh? No sooner do you bury UGA VI inside Sanford stadium than Alabama buries the whole lot of you. The other team in Alabama could have used a little help this weekend. After all, we beat the Gators the two previous years for you, and you only split your rotation with the Sabanites...
We, and our fellow SEC colleagues, trust that this whole black-out issue will be put to bed once and for all. As one of our readers here so eloquently mentioned, you guys were truly starting to believe in that hocus-pocus, and frankly, the rest of us were starting to worry. So get well soon because we're going to need your heads in it when you play LSU. In trade, we'll knock-off Vandy for you so you can recapture the East lead. Man, has life taken a turn for the surreal...
Love,
War Eagle Atlanta
