BRISTOL, Conn. - After leading the Tigers to their first SEC regular season championship in 20 years, senior DeWanna Bonner was named an ESPN.com First Team All-American, the sports network announced Friday.
Bonner joined a group consisting of Angel McCoughtry (Louisville), Renee Montgomery (Connecticut), Maya Moore (Connecticut) and Courtney Paris (Oklahoma) on the five-member team. Honored as second-team All-Americans by ESPN.com were Jayne Appel (Stanford), Tina Charles (Connecticut), Marissa Coleman (Maryland), Epiphanny Prince (Rutgers) and Kristi Tolliver (Maryland).
Others nominated for the team, which was voted on by ESPN.com columnists Mechelle Voepel, Graham Hays, Bracketologist Charlie Crème and women's basketball editor Melanie Jackson, were Kristi Cirone (Illinois State), Jantel Lavender (Ohio State) and Ashley Walker (California).
Bonner, McCoughtry, Montgomery and Moore were all unanimous selections to the team. A native of Fairfield, Ala., Bonner became the first Auburn player to ever lead the SEC in scoring as she averaged 21.0 points per game this season. She also averages 8.5 rebounds, 1.8 steals, 1.7 blocks and shoots 48.4 percent from the field heading into next week's NCAA Tournament.
"DeWanna Bonner's all-around game and ability to score inside and out have been the key to Auburn's rebirth," said Crème. "She combines unusual length with a guard skill set and is one of the best finishers on the break in the game today."
For her work during the season, Bonner was named the SEC Player of the Year and is a candidate for the Naismith, Wade and Wooden national player of the year awards. She was named to the All-SEC First Team for the third time in her career and became the first Auburn player selected to the All-SEC Defensive Team.
