Thoughts on a Weekend of College Football

There's not much left to say that hasn't already been said about Saturday's whipping at LSU. The margin of defeat was surprising, but so to was the way Auburn played in the first half. In the long run, a lot of lessons will come from this game.

From the start, it was clear that LSU had the better team. Auburn's offensive line looked like a New Orleans levy trying to hold off Katrina. It's hard to imagine a better team in college football this season...

Despite the numerous mistakes, Clint Moseley is clearly the best option Auburn has right now behind center. However you slice it, Auburn doesn't have a quarterback capable of playing above-average SEC football. The best fans can hope for this season is a caretaker who can manage the offense while limiting mistakes...

I've never been a fan of alternate uniforms, but I have to say LSU's version on Saturday was an improvement over what they typically where at home. They should give serious thought to making them permanent...

Can you do me a favor? Please take a second and go to the top left of the web page and vote Auburn at 100% in the fan confidence poll. We've got an idiot loose on the site who continues to create user names to write bogus comments and manipulate the confidence poll. I'm sure he's unemployed, living in his mama's basement with nothing better to do. What a sad existence...

On this October day, Kiehl Frazier looks miles away from being ready to start a college football game. With four regular season games left, plus a month of bowl preparation and spring practice ahead, hopefully he'll close the gap. Right now, I can't imagine him being ready to go next September. Let the Zeke Pike watch begin...

As bad as things looked Saturday in Baton Rouge, Auburn still has a chance to finish its most brutal month of football in years at 3-2. What looked like a sure thing a week ago now has the trappings of an upset. Houston Nutt is fighting for his life and his Ole Miss team will be ready to play Saturday. The Rebels looked awfully good in their loss to Arkansas. We should be careful to automatically assume a win...

Now is a good time to start taking a peek at bowl opportunities for this team. Should Auburn win three of its last four games, a New Year's Day (or later) bowl appearance is possible. The November 12th contest at Georgia will likely be the make or break game for that happening.

Eight wins could mean a trip to the Outback Bowl, Gator Bowl or Cotton Bowl. A loss to Ole Miss or Georgia would likely mean a trip to the Chick-Fil-A Bowl or Music City Bowl. Being defending national champions should be appealing to these bowl committees...

Don't expect offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn's appeal as a head coach to dim any because of his struggles this season. Programs know the kind of rebuilding process he's facing and also understand that he's had to slow his offense considerably this year to help out Auburn's young defense.

The chances of him returning next season are slim and none. You can bet Gene Chizik has already given a lot of thought to his replacement. His first stop should be in Clemson where Malzahn protégé Chad Morris has turned the ACC on its heels. Auburn should have little trouble paying what's necessary to move Morris to the SEC...

After a long afternoon of sorrow, you had to smile watching former Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville lead his Texas Tech team to an upset win over third-ranked Oklahoma. Despite losing two heartbreakers in subsequent weeks, Tuberville is slowly bringing the Tech program back. I'm still a fan...

Remember when Turner Gill was all the rage in college football? I remember getting a call from a producer at ESPN's Outside the Lines program probing to see whether racism was involved in Auburn choosing Chizik over Gill. It turns out, Auburn just wanted to win football games. Gill's record as Kansas head coach now sits at 5-14. Most believe he'll be shown the door at season's end...

How big is this weekend's Georgia-Florida contest? Many believe Georgia coach Mark Richt has taken himself off the hot seat with a 5-2 record. I'll remind Dawg fans that their signature win is a five point victory over a 4-3 Vanderbilt squad. A loss to the Gators will reignite the fire...

It looks like Missouri will officially join the SEC this week. And we just thought the addition of Arkansas and South Carolina brought nothing to the conference. I understand television and money talk; but who can get excited about away games at College Station and Columbia, Missouri?

Apparently, Alabama and Tennessee did enough whining to save their rivalry and keep Auburn in the SEC West and place Missouri in the East. I know our readership has been mixed on the proposed move to the East. Personally, I would have loved playing Tennessee and Florida again annually.
