With the news of All-SEC tailback, Mike Dyer's suspension for the bowl game it looks like it's time for Tre Mason to step up. The Freshman Mason is a much herald running back out of Lake Worth, Florida. He has seen limited playing time this year having only 19 caries for 97 yards.
However, he is a very capable back. Tre was rated by Rivals as the No.14 running back in the nation coming out of Park Vista High School in Lake Worth where he ran for over 4,600 yards and 68 touchdowns.
He hasn't seen the field that much this year because he has been behind Dyer on the depth chart. Yet he has shown some flashes of brilliant moments as a kickoff return man.
His brightest came in the opening game against Utah State. With the Tigers down 21 -7, he electrified both his team and 85,000 Auburn fans by returning a kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown. The score provided a big momentum shift, starting a 21-3 run that turned into a 28-24 Auburn lead.
He finished the day with 176 kick return yards and one touchdown on four attempts in the Tigers 42-38 win over the Aggies; a stat that tied him for the third highest total in Auburn history. Tre became the first freshman to return a kickoff for a touchdown since Brad Lester did it in 2005.
After the touchdown Tre said, "It wasn't just me ... Everyone did their assignment and it was wide open." The South Eastern Conference recognized his feat by naming him co-SEC Freshman of the Week for that debut performance.
With Dyer out of the line up, it will be even more important for "everyone to do their assignment" against the Cavaliers on New Year Eve's Night. At any rate It's Mason's time to step up. Good luck Tre, we know you can do it ... it's your time!
