A Promise Delivered

Tre Mason was named SEC Freshman of the Week today.

Auburn Freshman Tre Mason told his mom before the season began that he would keep a promise to score a touchdown on a kick off return. "I‘ve returned a kickoff for a touchdown every year since I was in the seventh grade," Tre  said, "I told my mom I would keep the tradition going."

It didn't take long for the freshman running back to deliver on his promise. With the Tigers down 21 -7 to Utah State in the season opener, he electrified both his team and 85,000 Auburn fans by returning a kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown. The score provided a big momentum shift, starting a 21-3 run that turned into a 28-24 Auburn lead.

He finished the day with 176 kick return yards and one touchdown on four attempts in the Tigers 42-38 win over the Aggies; a stat that ties him for the third highest total in Auburn history. Tre is the first freshman to return a kickoff for a touchdown since Brad Lester did it in 2005.

Although Mason delivered on his promise, he was quick to share credit with the Special Teams for the touchdown, "It wasn't just me ... Everyone did their assignment and it was wide open."

Nevertheless The South Eastern Conference recognized his feat by naming him co-SEC Freshman of the Week on Monday for his debut performance.

We congratulate Tre both on the SEC honor and for delivering on a promise.
