For the second straight season, Auburn senior Philip Lutzenkirchen has been named to the John Mackey Award watch list as the nation's top tight end.
The Nassau County Sports Commission released the 2012 list, named for former NFL and Baltimore Colts great John Mackey, today. The semi-finalist will be announced on November 12 and the finalists on November 19 with the winner being revealed on December 6, 2012 on ESPN at The Home Depot College Football Awards show.
Lutzenkirchen holds the Auburn record for the most touchdown catches by a tight end. He has scored 14 touchdowns on 44 receptions in his career including snagging 24 last season for seven touchdowns.
Always the consummate team player (and leader), Phillip, when hearing the news reportedly said, "The honor means nothing unless this team gets to the Georgia Dome in December."
If that team goal is achieved, you can bet Phillip Lutzenkirchen will have had a lot to do with it, Mackey Award winner or not.
