Wes Gilmer has parlayed his student assistant coaching gig into a full-time job. Gilmer has been named assistant baseball coach at the University of South Carolina- Beaufort, an NAIA School. Gilmer completed his degree in exercise science in 2012 and joins a Sand Shark team that went 41-19 and qualified for the NAIA Word Series last season.
"Wes is going to be a great addition to our staff," Lewallyn said. "We're very excited to have him and look forward to seeing him help our players get to the next level both offensively and defensively."
Gilmer's departure leaves two openings on the Auburn baseball staff. However, those are mainly volunteer/student positions and may or may not be filled for the 2013 season.
This isn't the only connection Auburn has to USCB. A few years ago, Auburn pitcher Dexter Price transferred to Beaufort after a short stint at Auburn. Price went on to become the USCB program's first MLB draft selection in 2011 and is currently in his second second with the Missoula Osprey (Rookie/Arizona Diamondbacks) where he has a 2-1 record and a 5.90 ERA.
