Recruiting: Update on Reuben Foster and Tray Matthews

Top linebacker prospect Reuben Foster told today that he will "definitely" be playing college football with four-star safety prospect Tray Matthews. Matthews is currently a Georgia commit, while Foster is committed to Alabama. Both players have shown interest in Auburn, and each have made visits recently. Auburn and Georgia are the only schools that both have mutual interest in. Matthews previously eliminated Alabama from contention and has stated he is down to Georgia and Auburn. Foster has primarily shown interest in Alabama and Auburn, with only marginal interest in Georgia.

This would seem to suggest that it will come down an Auburn/Georgia battle. Does this mean that both of these players for sure end up at Auburn or that they will be playing together? No, not at all. As we all know, recruiting is a funny game, and what a recruit says on July 1 must be taken with a grain of salt. But at this time, we feel like if they do play together in college, like Foster says they "definitely" will, then they will be playing for Auburn.

Foster has built some strong friendships with Auburn commits Dee Liner, Carl Lawson and especially Trey Johnson. Those guys have turned some of their own recruiting efforts towards Matthews and have formed a solid relationship with him, as well. Foster and Matthews played well together at the Rivals Five-Star Challenge last weekend, and it only further strengthened their friendship. Auburn has a very realistic shot to land both players, and the recruiting battles will likely last until Signing Day.

Tigers land an impressive kicking prospect -- One of the top combo-kicker prospects in the country, Daniel Carlson out of Colorado Springs, Colo., committed to Auburn last night, according to Kohl Kicking Academy. The official announcement came moments ago, per justin Hokanson and Rivals. Carlson's commitment gives Auburn a stellar special teams haul, already having secured a commitment from another top kicker, Jimmy Hutchinson. Hutchinson is expected to come in as a punter, while Carlson will most likely be a place-kicker.
