Odds For Auburn To Win National Championship or Nick Marshall to Win The Heisman

After Auburn's first loss of the season, where do things stand for the Tigers and Nick Marshall?

Spruce Derden-USA TODAY Sports

I haven't really done any odds posts this year, but I figure with the loss to Mississippi State this past weekend it might be interesting to take a look at how Auburn's fortunes have changed. All numbers are courtesy of Bovada.lv.

The National Championship Race

Here is the Top 10 for winning the national championship last week before and then after the suspension of UGA running back Todd Gurley

Odds on 10/7/14           Current Odds

Auburn                                      6/1                    11/2

Florida State                             11/2                  11/2

Michigan State                         8/1                    8/1

Alabama                        10/1                  9/1

Georgia                        8/1                    12/1

Notre Dame                              12/1                  12/1

Baylor                                        14/1                  14/1

Mississippi                    14/1                  16/1

Mississippi State                      16/1                  16/1

Ohio State                                14/1                  16/1

So where do things stand, now?

The Top 10 with the best odds to win the National Championship are as follows:

Odds on 10/10/14         Current Odds

Florida State                             11/2                  6/1

Mississippi State                      16/1                  7/1

Michigan State                         8/1                    15/2

Mississippi                   16/1                  15/2

Alabama                        9/1                    8/1

Notre Dame                              12/1                  10/1

Oklahoma                       16/1                  10/1

Auburn                                       11/2                  12/1

Baylor                                         14/1                  14/1

Georgia                        12/1                  14/1

So what?

Auburn is currently 8th in this list, which is also their ranking according to the Coaches' Poll. Of the teams ahead of us, everyone but Oklahoma still plays another team on that list (some play two of them). What this means for Auburn is that if you were considering stepping over the edge and writing this season off as lost, then please step away. Auburn still has a very real chance of making it to the College Football Playoff and winning it all.

The Heisman Race

This is how the Heisman Trophy race looked after the announcement of Todd Gurley's suspension last Wednesday. Previously, he had the best odds to win the coveted Stiff-arm Trophy.

Odds on 10/7/14           Current Odds

Dak Prescott (QB Mississippi State)                  5/2                            2/1

Nick Marshall (QB Auburn)                                11/2                           5/2

Marcus Mariota (QB Oregon)                            8/1                            4/1

Everett Golson (Notre Dame)                            10/1                           6/1

Amari Cooper (WR Alabama)                       25/1                           20/1

Ameer Abdullah (RB Nebraska)                         16/1                           20/1

Kenny Hill (QB Texas A&M)                                20/1                              20/1

Melvin Gordon (RB Wisconsin)                          20/1                           20/1

Jameis Winston (QB Florida State)                    20/1                           22/1

Brett Hundley (QB UCLA)                          33/1                           33/1

What Are They Now?

Here is how the odds look as of this morning. Nick Marshall, like Auburn, sits at #8

Odds on 10/10/14         Current Odds

Dak Prescott (QB Mississippi State)                   2/1                            9/4

Marcus Mariota (QB Oregon)                              4/1                            3/1

Bryce Petty (QB Baylor)                        33/1                           11/2

Everett Golson (Notre Dame)                             6/1                            11/2

Melvin Gordon (RB Wisconsin)                          20/1                           11/2

Bo Wallace (QB Mississippi)                   Off the Board                20/1

Jameis Winston (QB Florida State)                    22/1                           20/1

Nick Marshall (QB Auburn)                        5/2                            20/1

Ameer Abdullah (RB Nebraska)                         20/1                           25/1

Amari Cooper (WR Alabama)                       20/1                           33/1

What Are The Chances?

I would say they're questionable, but Nick's numbers have still been pretty good even while many criticize him for various reasons. If he takes off like he did last year (which could be greatly helped by an improvement in the running game outside of Marshall), then he still has a real shot at the Heisman if some of the players above falter. It's hard to see players like Bryce Petty or Marcus Mariota having enough bad games to give him a real shot at it, though.

But who knows, really? That's why we play the games. I just thought y'all might be interested.
