The Auburn Tigers - fresh off their big upset win over Xavier - will return to action tonight against the Tigers of Texas Southern. At first glance, you look at record of Texas Southern (2-8), and think that after Xavier this should be easy.
However, Texas Southern took down #25 Michigan State on Saturday night 71-64 in over time. So this is a team that is capable of pulling off a big upset themselves. Moreover, they did win the SWAC last season and made the NCAA Tournament's "First Four," so this is yet another NCAA Tournament team from last season that Bruce Pearl's Tigers are facing. Let's just hope that Michigan State victory was their only big non-conference upset this season.
This will be Texas Southern's fifth straight road game and is the middle of a ten game road stretch. Texas Southern has only played one home game so far this season and will not play another one until January 17th. I can't imagine having to play that schedule.
Auburn hasn't exactly been lighting up the scoreboards so far this season - though that seems to be improving over the past few games - but Texas Southern is even worse. Auburn ranks 184th in the nation in points scored per game, while Texas Southern is 314th. With defense being a strength for the Tigers (Auburn-type), hopefully this game goes well for the home team. I say that with some trepidation as it sounds eerily similar to what someone else recently said about playing Auburn.
Auburn should be able to come away with the victory tonight and take a nice little Christmas break before returning to action next Monday night. Let's hope so, anyway.
