Sad rumors that began floating around this Sunday morning have turned to tragic confirmation with the reports of the death of former Auburn TE/H-back Philip Lutzenkirchen in a car accident early Sunday Morning.. Lutz's career at Auburn was a fun one marked with great plays and iconic moments and ended before we all wanted it to with an injury during the 2012 season. After a brief period with the St Louis Rams, Lutzie recently had taken a volunteer coaching position with St James School in Montgomery.
Lutz will forever be remembered for his part in the iconic throwback pass to take the lead over Alabama in the 2010 Iron Bowl and the dance dubbed "The Lutzie."
He made one of the most beautiful one handed catches I've ever seen against Ole Miss in 2011.
By all accounts he was a great young man with a bright future ahead of him. In addition to his volunteer work with St James School in just the past few days he began contributing to Auburn's 247Sports site AuburnUndercover. I never had any opportunity to meet him, but the way he carried himself on and off the field always impressed me. I looked forward to his insights into Auburn football in the coming years. It's heartbreaking to learn of the death of someone so young. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends this morning. The Auburn Family has lost a great Auburn Man.
Updated: Reports are that UGA baseball player Ian Davis was also killed in this event. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends as well.
