College Football Knockouts: Week 6

Northwestern at Michigan. Not a matchup that would normally pique much interest, but the Wildcats were 5-0 and the Wolverines were 4-1, their only loss to a surprisingly strong Utah team in Week 1. With an over/under of about 36, surely this would be a close game that would go down to the wire.

Wrong.

Instead, Michigan shut out Northwestern and earned the third fastest knockout since 2005.

Ronday Rousey Award

The Wolverines took the opening kickoff to the house and immediately forced a three-and-out. Michigan would go on to score on its next possession, so Northwestern snapped the ball only three times on offense while down by only one score. The Wildcats never had a chance.

Troy is not good this year. Its only win is over the only FCS team on the schedule so far. Mississippi State scored on the second play of the opening possession and then returned a Trojan fumble for a touchdown three plays later.

Clemson *whispering* might be really good this year. The Tigers are undefeated and made quick work of the Yellow Jackets. First, Wayne Gallman scored from 66 yards out on the third play of the game. Tech threw an interception on the sixth. Finally, Clemson made sure Georgia Tech never had the ball down only one score again when it kicked a field goal a few minutes later.

Floyd Mayweather Award

Lots of games were decided with zeroes on the clock, even more if you count the games that were close with less than a minute left. So I'll briefly mention the games and results, but link to the winners' and losers' blogs for their reactions.

Wake Forest beat Boston College in inexplicable fashion. You know it's bad when BC Interruption's front page has not one, but two dumpster fires and the Breaking News is "All Is Lost". SB Nation recapped each of the three "MASSIVE SCREW UPS" complete with GIFs of each, while Blogger So Dear is just happy with a win, how ever it was earned handed to them.

East Carolina scored 17 straight points in the fourth quarter of it game against BYU, tying the game at 38 a piece. The Cougars finally answered with 19 seconds left by scoring the winning touchdown. The Pirates were able to get to midfield in just a couple of plays but ran out of time.

UNLV got the ball first in overtime with San Jose State, but missed a field goal. Tyler Ervin ran four times on the Spartans' possession and won the game with a touchdown.

Washington State scored a touchdown to pull within one of Oregon with one second left. The Cougars had not beaten the Ducks since 2006, so obviously Mike Leach considered going to two.

But he didn't. Instead, the Cougars won in double overtime.

Ah, the best game of the week is always the one with Tennessee. After falling on the wrong side of the Mayweather Award twice this season, Butch Jones finally got the big win he needed, with the help of an absolutely ridiculous punt. Meanwhile, those classy DWAGS opened up a thread solely for NSFW venting. I may or may not be reading some of that tonight after work.

As an aside, Nebraska has three losses on the wrong side of the Mayweather Award. It would have been four, but Wisconsin Badgers actually kicked the game-winning field goal with four seconds remaining. Had the ensuing kickoff been a touchback, the Cornhuskers would have had another offensive play and the KO would have been at 0:00 again.

That's what happened to UT-San Antonio. Louisiana Tech took the lead for good with a field goal in the last ten seconds. The Roadrunners got one Hail Mary, but it fell incomplete.

And finally, Oklahoma State and West Virginia needed overtime to decide a winner. Cowboys Ride For Free is pretty excited about being one of three undefeated teams in the Big12 while The Smoking Musket is heartbroken. And calling for those in charge of the music in Morgantown to stop playing Seven Nation Army apparently.
