Well, here we are.
It's the end of another basketball season for the Auburn Tigers, and it's certainly been one for the books. For the most part, it's been plagued with frustration, disappointment, injury, and impatience, but despite all of that, it's still been a positive thing knowing Bruce Pearl is at the helm, and he's not going anywhere soon.
Auburn (12-18, 4-13 SEC) has one final chance to sweeten an otherwise bitter season by beating Georgia (19-10, 10-7 SEC) in front of its home crowd on Senior Day this afternoon. The Tigers already took care of business in a hostile environment in Athens in February, which makes today's game potentially even more gratifying with a chance to sweep a very good Bulldogs team.
Georgia will be coming off a heartbreaking, but exciting loss to Kentucky earlier this week—a game that many thought might be the Wildcats' first loss of the season. Alas, Calipari and his gang of youngin's pulled away with the win late, leaving the Bulldogs hungry. Let's hope a rowdy Auburn Arena will spoil their appetite.
For Auburn, it's "so long" to a fantastic group of seniors: K.C. Ross-Miller, Malcolm Canada, Antoine Mason (graduate student), and KT Harrell (graduate student). All four players have been positive influences to this program, and all have contributed throughout their time as Auburn players. They will certainly be missed next season as Pearl begins to bring in some of his own recruits to start the cycle over again.
In terms of what to expect, well, it's Senior Day, and these guys will need to deliver their best to beat a Bulldogs team who might not be able to process what happened in Athens a few weeks ago in February (what with their fragile Bulldog egos and all). On a Saturday afternoon, there's no telling what kind of crowd will show up for this game, but it should be a big one, and as far as the students are concerned, a loud one. Pearl will need one of the loudest, craziest crowds he's had so far this season to get the job done today.
After today's game, it's the SEC Tournament for the Tigers, who are currently projected near the bottom of the seeding. Let's hope a solid victory against a bitter rival is enough to boost these players' spirits for the upcoming challenge in Nashville.
Complete the sweep, boys. War Damn Eagle.
