Auburn Baseball Defeats Mercer in NCAA Tallahassee Regional 1-0

The Tigers survive!

Wade Rackley / Auburn Athletics

Just like their sisters on the softball team, the Tigers baseball team survives to play again.

It certainly wasn't easy. Jackson Burgreen had to make another catch against the wall. Base runners were plenty throughout the game, but getting runs out of them was another story altogether.

It finally happened in the bottom of the 6th inning when Tiger catcher Blake Logan scored Justin Ebert on a sacrifice fly. Starting pitcher Rocky McCord threw 6 2/3 innings, but didn't allow any runs. He was replaced in the 7th inning by none other than Keegan Thompson, who got the Tigers out of the inning.

Keegan wasn't done, though. He then went through the order in the 8th inning on 11 pitches and returned to the mound in the 9th to close it out. It wasn't easy, though. On what would have been the game ending strike out, the ball got past Blake Logan and the runner made it to 1st base before he could recover.

It was a gutsy performance by the sophomore who is likely destined for Tommy John surgery in the off season.

Auburn will face the loser of tonight's FSU / College of Charleston game tomorrow at noon EST, 11am CDT. We'll have more information on the opponent and the match-up late tonight or early tomorrow morning.

War Eagle!!
