News and notes from the Auburn corners of the Internet

Joe Maiorana-USA TODAY Sports

GOLF

I'm not sure what the SwingThought.com Tour is, but former Auburn golfer Will McCurdy shot 59 yesterday in the opening round at Callaway Gardens. That's impressive no matter where you are.

FOOTBALL

Jeremy Johnson was named to the Davey O'Brien Award watch list, yesterday. That award is given to the nation's top quarterback for the year.

In a rather strange twist, Auburn was picked by the media to finish second the SEC West, but also to win the conference. I know it sounds crazy, but there's a legitimate reason behind it. It has to do with the way each particular vote was tallied. I explained it a bit more in that article.

Michigan transfer Blake Countess seems to be fitting in well with his new teammates at Auburn according to James Crepea of AL.com. That's great news given Auburn's need for players in the secondary.

James Crepea also talks of how Auburn plans to manage expectations around star freshman Byron Cowart, and about how Auburn can look to Georgia for a blueprint against Louisville. The Bulldogs played the Cardinals in their bowl game last season, and Louisville's defensive coordinator should be a bit familiar for Auburn, as well, since he was formerly at Georgia.

The Sporting News has their pre-season Top 25 out, and Auburn is ranked pretty highly in it. I'm curious about their assertion that some on the staff felt Johnson should have been playing more over Marshall last season, though. I wonder just who that was and where they got that information. I'm not saying I don't believe them, because I do, but I'm just curious.
