Crestview, Florida Wide Receiver Marquis McClain Commits to Auburn

The Tigers add commitment #2 on the day, and #12 to the 2016 class.

Anytime Dameyune Craig tweets a "Boom," then you know there's big news coming. That boom came shortly after 6pm Central time this evening.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Can I get a boom!!!!!! Beautiful day in Auburn</p>&mdash; DC (@CoachDCraig) <a href="https://twitter.com/CoachDCraig/status/625081573168271360">July 25, 2015</a></blockquote>

At first I assumed this was regarding the early commitment of 2017 ATH Alaric Williams, since Coach Craig had yet to tweet regarding that. Instead, 247Sports reported that 2* WR Marquis McClain of Crestview, FL had committed to the Tigers.

Now, I know what you're thinking when you first see that. A 2-star wide receiver?!? It's important to note that all staffs go by what they see, and not just by the recruiting services. McClain doesn't even have enough ratings to register on the 247Sports Composite. I'm sure that will change, now.

McClain picked the Tigers over offers from Mississippi State, Appalachian State, Georgia Southern, Minnesota, and Nebraska. He is 6'2, 195 lbs (Hudl lists him at 210 lbs), so he has a great frame for a wide receiver. He's also listed as a 4.45 40 runner, so that's pretty decent speed, as well.

The Highlights

I like the back shoulder catch in the first drill. He also looks like he's got a pretty good leap. I'm no expert, so I can't say exactly what the Tigers see in him, but if they're willing to take him right now, then it's obvious they think they're getting a sleeper. Sammie Coates wasn't exactly a highly rated prospect when the Tigers picked him up, either.

The Class

McClain's commitment doesn't exactly tip any scales for the 2016 recruiting class rankings, right now. The Tigers are at 12 commitments, but because he's not rated by a few services, as of this publishing, Auburn is still 23rd in the nation and 8th in the SEC. I'm sure he'll be rated by other services soon and may receive a bit of a bump, then.

He is the second wide receiver in this class, following Eli Stove of Niceville, FL. He joins QB Woody Barrett, RB Malik Miller, and offensive tackle Brodarious Hamm on the offensive side of the ball.
