I can't say that I like hearing that there are inconsistencies on defense, but I still think we're going to be fine. We just have to keep reminding ourselves that this is not going to be a Top 10 defense just because Will Muschamp is the defensive coordinator. It's still going to struggle at times.
I don't know what to make of the linebacker battle. I really hope it's because Tre Williams, Justin Garrett, and Javiere Mitchell are pushing Frost and McKinzy hard for a spot. I think McKinzy is going to be a starter, but Frost may get pushed out. If that happens, I definitely hope it's because the player that takes the spot has just improved that much more than last year's starter.
Happy with Byron Cowart's performance? PUT HIM IN, COACH! I really can't wait to see Cowart and Lawson lined up on opposite ends of the defensive line.
Please let Tray Matthews' hamstring be ok. We really need him at full strength with the rest of the depth that we have. I think the comment that Countess would be Safety #3 speaks more to Countess' ability and Auburn's confidence in Josh Holsey and Jonathan Jones than as a knock on Nick Ruffin. The coaches know they'd be perfectly ok with Holsey and Jones at CB and Countess is more than capable (and has big-game experience) of handling the Safety role to ensure there's experience on the field at all positions.
You could take Muschamp's comment about scoring more points this time around at Auburn as a shot at Tuberville, but I don't think that's the way he meant it. Plenty of Tubs' teams could have scored a lot more points than they did. It just wasn't Tubs' philosophy to score as much as possible. The #TUBERSHELL was a very real thing, and it may have contributed to my developing an ulcer at a young age as I watched Auburn take a game in hand and then the opposing team slowly work their way back into it because we let the foot off the gas.
