Auburn scored 4 runs in the 1st inning and then scored a run in every subsequent inning until the Bottom of the 7th against Alabama in Montgomery tonight in the latest edition of the annual "non-conference" game played in the state's capital.
Josh Palacios got the fun started for the Tigers with a triple on the second at-bat of the game. He scored on a Jordan Ebert single. Then with two men on, Daniel Logan hit first home run in two years with a 3-run shot.
Alabama looked for a moment like they would also get their bats going as they had a bases loaded situation and got a run across in the 2nd, but that was all they managed.
Auburn, meanwhile, put up 1, 2, 1, 1, 1 on the board over the course of the 2nd through 6th innings to take the dominating 10-1 lead. The run in the 4th came courtesy of a monster home run by Anfernee Grier, who was 3 for 5 on the night, for his team-leading 7th home run of the season.
Neither team threw their best pitchers, but Alabama definitely got more work out of their bullpen in this one, throwing a total of four pitchers. Auburn left #MidWeekMitchell on the mound for 6 innings, where he allowed 1 run on 6 hits. Gordon Cardenas came on in relief for him and closed out the Tide, allowing only 2 hits in his second save appearance of the year.
Auburn's 10 runs were the most scored in the history of the Capital City Classic. It's an event Auburn has dominated since it began in 2009. The Tigers have won 7 of the 8 contests in Riverwalk Stadium.
Auburn's next game will be this Friday in a weekend series against LSU, who is also coming off two dropped conference series and will be looking for a positive outcome.
