Auburn will make a December trip up north to New York to play head coach Bruce Pearl's alma mater Boston College next basketball season according to CBSSports' Jon Rothstein. The Tigers and Eagles will be joined by Seton Hall and South Carolina. All four are Under Armour schools, and the double-header is billed as a "Reunion" highlighting them for that reason.
This will mark Auburn's first trip to Madison Square Garden or New York City in general for a basketball game. It will be the third time in school history that the Tigers have taken on Boston College. Auburn leads the series 2-1. The previous games were a home-and-home in 2012 and 2013 (split series) and a game in 1985 which Auburn won.
Through a release from the University, Auburn head coach Bruce Pearl said that
There are a handful of buildings that you walk into around the country and you stop and you have to say to yourself, am I really coaching on the floor where Red Holzman of the Knicks and Red Auerbach with the Celtics led those great teams?
To coach there having been there with BC in the early days of Big East and what Madison Square Garden meant to the Big East Conference where it went from ECAC to the Big East is special.
This game joins the 2016 Cancun Challenge as a neutral-site contest Auburn will take part in. The Tigers will face Purdue, Texas Tech, and Utah State in that event. This particular game should be a win for Auburn if the team is much improved. Boston College was winless in the ACC in 2015-16.
