The full press release can be found here. USM is the second scheduled opponent for 2018, along with Alabama State. Currently this is the only opponent scheduled for 2020. Southern Miss will not, at least as of today, fill the SEC rule of one major conference opponent per season, but there is still time to fill that void.
Auburn and Southern Miss have faced off 22 times, with Auburn holding a 17-5 edge in the series. Auburn won the last meeting 27-13 in 2008. The two teams played 13 times between 1977 and 1993, with Auburn winning 10 of them. Auburn's 10-9 loss to Southern Miss in 1991 not only kept the Tigers from having a winning record, but was also the last time that Auburn lost to a team from outside of a major conference*.
*-though South Florida is currently not in a major conference, the Big East was considered a major conference when they defeated Auburn in overtime in 2007.
