News and notes from the Auburn corners of the Internet

Auburn Athletics

BASKETBALL

Auburn commit Austin Wiley continues to impress. Fresh off a big time win in the FIBA U17 tournament with the national team, he has now earned MVP honors at the Under Armour Elite 24 event.

SOCCER

Things didn't start out too great for Auburn with a 0-2 loss to Clemson on Friday night. They got back to .500 with a golden goal victory in 2OT against South Alabama in Mobile, last night.

FOOTBALL

Auburn added another member to the 2017 recruiting class Friday morning with the commitment of 3* Safety Jordyn Peters.

Aubie got the Marvel treatment as part of the whole ABC/Disney/ESPN/Marvel conglomerate marketing campaign for Week 1 of the college football season. The marquee games on their family of networks all got a special Marvel comic book cover promo.

The Pre-Season AP Top 25 was released Sunday morning. It's no surprise that Auburn isn't on it, though the Tigers are at #33 when you count the "others receiving votes." Just like with the Coaches Poll, Auburn is currently scheduled to face five teams ranked in the Top 25. Two of those will be at home within the first four weeks. The other three will all be on the road in the final three road games.

Auburn scrimmaged Saturday morning and Gus Malzahn met with the media after it was over. There's not much new in the QB race, but some WRs are expected back for Tuesday. I'm curious about the wording behind all of the stuff on Kyle Davis being back to practice on Tuesday. I'm 99% sure he's already been at least doing some basic workouts. Perhaps he's already been going through the NCAA-mandated time frame of working out in shorts, then pads, etc. I say that because last week we saw a video posted by Charles Goldberg of the receivers doing drills. There sure looks to be a big man wearing a #11 jersey (albeit rolled up to somewhat obscure the numbers) in full pads running through drills. I'd say that means Davis will be back going full-speed with everyone else this Tuesday.

TJ Neal is adjusting to life in Alabama as opposed to Illinois. What's one of the biggest differences? The heat. I suspect it's more the humidity, but either way.

Meanwhile, AL.com is reporting that Auburn's other graduate transfer, Marshall Taylor, is now back with the team after weeks of being told his return is just around the corner. That will be huge for the cornerback depth, which took a hit with Jamel Dean's knee injury.

Kerryon Johnson and Malik Miller are very familiar with each other. They're used to being in the same backfield. The official site has more on their friendship through high school and on to Auburn.

Auburn has a lot of talented freshman on the team after the 2016 signing class. Many of them - perhaps most of them - will get a chance to show what they can do on the field this fall.

The Ledger-Enquirer asks if this is a farewell tour for Daniel Carlson before heading off to the NFL. After seeing the struggles Aguayo has had after being drafted in the 2nd round, I'm guessing no team is going to draft a kicker early - if at all - in the next draft. However, Carlson will already have a degree and probably be a sure thing to land a spot somewhere, so whether or not he thinks he can get drafted, he still may decide to head to the pros after this season.

People are up in arms over Auburn asking fans to wear orange for the Clemson game. I understand reasons for it, honestly. Orange is the color they tend to want people to wear most, anyway. Clemson normally wears it, sure, and if they bring a lot of fans to fill up the corners of the upper deck that often look bare, then it will look like a lot of Auburn fans on TV.
