Observations from Game to Game on Sean White in 2015 - Mississippi State

Shanna Lockwood-USA TODAY Sports

Editor's Note: This is a great idea for examining Sean White in 2015, and since commenter/reader OhIndeedMaybe? decided to take it on and save me the trouble, I'm gladly putting it on the Front Page!

So I pretty much messed up with both the timing and what I was shooting for in my last fanpost when I was giving the opinion that anybody even JJ could win the qb job and then later that day Malzahn announced White as the starter... As something of an apology for that I figured I'd do a fanpost series focusing on Sean White's performance as qb in the games he started last year before Clemson this week. I already did something very similar for the whole offense but the difference here will be observations and stats will be more focused on White. Vids are from WarRoom Eagle's youtube channel and stats will be from cfbstats.com and espn, play summaries of the pass plays are from espn. Today we will look at the MSU game...

Observations:

- 2 of those long developing play action sacks.
- Good poise.
- Accurate throws.
- He hangs tough but takes at least 1 sack he shouldn't.
- Near interception a few plays before his real one. DB (Redmond I think) either miss-timed his jump or wasn't quite in the right spot.
- Not many down field passes this game. Most seem to be in the 5-15 yard range.
- He seems to be reading on the zone read better than I remember. Not perfect by any means.
- 6:30 run by Sean White was probably his best of the year.
- Of his longer runs most are designed keepers or reads with 1 or 2 scrambles.
- 8:41 nice keep on the read by Sean.
- 9:30 ill advised pass. Could have been an interception.
- Passing starts to be more downfield late, probably due to necessity. Mixed bag on results.
- If I calculated and guessed right outside of sacks White averaged about 8 ypc on his runs.

- Sacks
-- 0:20 - Long developing play action sack. Not sure if the receiver was just well covered or if he didn't have enough time to find someone.
-- 10:28 - I think that sack may be more on a missed block than White holding the ball.
-- 10:41 - Yet again with the long developing play action sack.
-- 11:46 - takes a bad sack when he should have thrown the ball away.

- Misses/drops on catchable balls
-- 8:34 - would have been a tough grab. - Yards missed: 4.5-5
-- 9:44 - looks like Barber lets one go through his hands. - Yards missed: 2 or so
-- 9:50 - another tough grab but seems catchable. Can't quite tell if it hit the ground before getting in the receiver's vicinity. Yards missed: 5
-- 9:57 - maybe a bit behind the receiver but seems catchable. - Yards missed: 2+
-- 11:26 - cmon man... Takes a bit of a hit on the catch but cmon... - Yards missed: 16+
-- Approximate yards missed: 25

Overall:

Overall a pretty solid game by White especially for a first start for a red shirt freshman.

The biggest negatives would probably be the the turnover and snafu with the snap in the red zone with the near interception and taking at least 1 sack he didn't have to being the next biggest.

On the positive side White was very accurate this game and even with 5 or so misses/drops by his receivers he had an overall completion percentage of 71.4% and he moved the offense. Another big positive in this game was his running outside of sacks he had about 66 yards with about a 8 ypc average.

My main come away from this game with White was even as a first time starter the stage wasn't too big for him and the moment was not too big for him as he mostly made good decisions running and throwing the football. At the same time his inexperience shows and the issues in the red zone in this game were a bit of a red flag.

Grade:

No TDs and some mistakes... Still there were a good number of positive things and White gets some leeway for it being his first start and being a red shirt freshman. B-
