Observations from Game to Game on Sean White in 2015 - Arkansas

Jasen Vinlove-USA TODAY Sports

In the last fanpost we saw White have a pretty good game on the road against Kentucky. That was against Kentucky though, how did he do against a mid-tier level SEC team in Arkansas for the next game? Once more into the breech!

To be fair to the receivers on a number of the passes mentioned they would have been tough catches so I'll try not to be too harsh.

Observations:

- White being his usual accurate, poised and gritty self.
- White needing his receivers to come down with at least a few of these tough balls but he's not getting much help there.
- It doesn't appear that White is looking to run much on the read plays. Not sure if that is on him or if the coaches gave him instructions to not carry it often.
- White showing off the arm strength again this game.
- 3:13 whoof, glad that one worked out. Credit to the receiver on tracking that one down and credit to White for still getting the ball out.
- White hanging in there and delivering/getting rid of the ball on a number of plays where he gets hit or pressured.
- White with a better game in the red zone today. A couple of completions (1 for a 1st down), a 2pt conversion and 3 yards rushing for him.
- 12:27 nicely done on the 2pt conversion.
- Good grief that's a lot of lost yardage from drops and misses...
- I don't know how much more from your qb you could ask for than what White gave for that game.

- Sacks
-- 7:15 - pocket just caves in on White before he throws it. Other than his checkdown not sure he has anyone else before he starts to go down.

- Misses/drops on catchable balls
-- 0:16 - Good effort on the catch but a drop... - Yards missed: 36 or so

-- For purposes of counting missed yardage I'm just going to add the 29 yard miss.
--- 0:43 - Would have been a tough catch... - Yards missed: 29 or so
--- 0:51 - I wonder if our guys were wearing "ball repellant" on their hands... - Yards missed: 10 or so

-- 1:18 - I will not pull my hair out re-watching this. I will not pull my hair out re-watching this. I will not pull my hair out re-watching this... - Yards missed: 16 or so
-- 1:40 - That would have been a tough one to get. - Yards missed: 40 or so
-- 2:05 - Doubtful that it would have been a 1st down but it still counts. - Yards missed: 5+
-- 6:43 - Not a WR this time (dang it Cox) but a similar result, another tough grab that doesn't end up happening. - Yards missed: about 18
-- 6:59 - It looks like a drop or a miss but it's hard to tell in this vid and I didn't see a longer vid that had it to try to take a closer look at it to completely verify, in any case... Yards missed: 36-38

-- For purposes of counting missed yardage I'm just going to add one of the 24 yard TD misses from the next 3.
--- 12:43 - JFSIDFOJEOIPWE#$@*#(JDSFSD)... fudgenuggets... To be fair it would have been another tough grab.- Yards missed: 24 or so and a TD
--- 12:51 - That may just be a good play by the defender, I'm tempted to not count this one. What do ya'll think after watching? ( link here ) - Yards missed: 24 or so and a TD
--- 12:59 - Another tough catch there to grab, another failure to do so. Yards missed: 11 or so.

-- Total missed yardage: approximately 204+ and a TD.

Overall:

I'll talk about the missed catches/drops in a bit...

As far as his passing White was pretty much on the money this game with all but a couple of his passes being in spots where his receiver could make a play. For the most part White also was able to avoid and get rid of the football before pressure got there apart from the sack and 1 pass that was fortunate (or planned?) to go near a receiver while White was being hit. White's red zone stats were actually ok this game as well going 2-2 as well as getting a 2 point conversion in as well.

As far as running the ball White didn't really do that much, and I'm not sure if that was choice on his part or if the coaches directed him to not keep it much. In either case he didn't do too much in the running game with only 3 yards on 2 carries outside of the sack.

As far as the drops/misses on the catchable balls... On a good many of them they would have been tough catches. Which leads to the question of if White could have put them in better spots for his receivers to have a better chance of catching them and my answer to that question is "maybe". I'm tempted to say "probably" but I'm just not sure. At the same time White put them in spots where those passes could have caught but they were not. Either way the bottom line is 11 of White's passes did not get completed when they had a chance to be caught resulting in something like 204 missed yards and a missed TD opportunity.

Bearing in mind what was just mentioned above if we apply it to White's stats as if they were completed then White's numbers change from 19-32 for 254 yards and 0 TDs to something like 27-29 for 458 yards and a TD. (The reason I don't have it as 30-32 is because some of those misses/drops came on the same drive or set of downs.) If we try to be more fair and say the receivers only catch maybe half of those balls that would still have White completing 23+ passes for 350+ yards or so with possibly a TD.

As far as criticisms of White as I previously mentioned maybe he could have gotten the ball in some better spots for the receivers and there was that 1 pass at 3:13 that could have been bad. He also took a sack.

On the positive side White was spot on for most of his passes and did a very nice job bringing the team back in this game.

Overall I'm just not sure how much more White could have been asked to do in this game than he did.

Grade:

Goodness... As is White had a pretty good game throwing for 250+ yards at a 59% completion percentage, no turnovers and just not many negatives at all with his play this game. If I grade it on how he potentially could have done if all those passes had been caught then I could see rating White as an A or so. However I don't think it's fair to say all those passes should have been caught, but even then if at least half are caught White has a really good day and the game is potentially won. In the end I don't think White can take much of the blame for the loss given how he played. I'll give partial credit on the drops and give him a B+.

We're all just trying to have a good time here. Don't be a jerk, and we won't have a problem with you. War Eagle!
