Conference play has been pretty rough for Auburn, so far. The Tigers are 0-3 and staring 0-5 in the face if they don't win against Mizzou in Columbia tonight and a road trip to Rupp Arena coming this weekend.
Any road game in college basketball is a tough one. Fortunately for this Auburn team, they've faced some road challenges with playing at UAB and at UConn. They'll be facing a Mizzou team that has been having a rough go of the 2016-17 season to date.
The Mizzou Tigers are 5-9 overall and 0-2 in conference play with losses vs LSU and at UGA. They do have very close loses to #11 Xavier and a win over Western Kentucky on the resume, though. They're capable of playing at a high level, but they haven't done so too often this season.
Mizzou has spread their scoring out this season. They have three players in the double-digits, but they're all fairly low with 11.9, 11.0, and 10.2 points per game. One of those is by junior forward Jordan Barnett who has only played in 5 games so far this season. He - like Auburn's Austin Wiley - is just getting back into the swing of things. They're not a tall team, either. They have two players at 6'10, but they're both freshmen who don't contribute much.
Auburn is going into this game short-handed with Danjel Purifoy not making the trip after his ankle injury against Ole Miss late in the 1st half Saturday night. Mustapha Heron and Jared Harper will need to play up to their usual standards and will need some help from someone like TJ Dunans to get the win in this one. It would also really help if Bryce Brown could break out of his cold spell, but I'm not holding my breath.
The Tigers really need this win. This game could go a long way towards getting the conference schedule back on track. It could also go a long way towards making the conference schedule a long slog similar to the last few years of misery.
Don't miss a second.
