This is a big boom for the Auburn recruiting class. Today, at his Army All-American jersey presentation, 4* CB Christian Tutt announced he would be suiting up for the Auburn Tigers next season. This comes on the heels of his official visit to Auburn for the Georgia game. Think it’s safe to say he enjoyed that beatdown?
It seems right that Tutt and Auburn would find each other late this recruiting cycle. Tutt’s recruitment has been all over the place with multiple different teams considered his leader at separate times including Alabama, Ohio State, Florida State, Georgia and recently Nebraska. Meanwhile, Auburn seems to have a new name on the CB board every week but not much clarity on who exactly the staff wants to bring in. But both sides have long been in communication and Auburn desperately needed a high quality cornerback in this class. In the end, it worked out beautifully for both sides as Auburn lands a talented player at a major position of need while Tutt ends up at a top SEC school with a chance to get on the field early.
Make no mistake, Tutt was very much a take for both Ohio State and Nebraska. The Tigers sliding in late here and stealing the talented Georgia native away is a huge coup for this staff and another big win for the future of Greg Brown’s secondary. Auburn is bringing in some DUDES in this year’s secondary class.
Highlights
Scouting Report
Speed is the first thing that jumps out when watching Tutt’s tape. You can see it on full display on any of his many long kick returns but you can also see it in his pursuit on defense. Tutt arrives to the ball in a hurry and with bad intentions. He’s a very physical corner which you have to love. Something I noticed in his junior tape was his tendency to try and deliver those shoulder boom type tackles that look good on highlight tapes but will get you burned at the next level. Those all but disappear in his 2018 tape, replaced by good form tackling which is a really positive sign in his maturation and development. His combination of speed and physicality will make him, at a minimum, a special teams contributor in 2018 with the chance to see meaningful snaps in the defensive backfield as a freshman. A very talented cornerback prospect.
The Class
Tutt is Auburn’s 15th commitment but the first cornerback. More than likely the Tigers will sign at least one more cornerback as it’s sounding like Carlton Davis will be declaring for the NFL at the end of the season. I have no idea who will end up at that 2nd spot but having someone of Tutt’s calibre already on board should allow the Tigers to maybe take a chance on a prospect that might not be as highly rated but could be flying under the radar.
This is a huge win for the coaching staff who have had some struggles with top cornerback targets this cycle. Auburn’s beatdown of the once #1 rated Dawgs Saturday helped them land a big time cornerback prospect. What might another win over a #1 team bring in a few weeks? I would love to find out....
War Eagle Christian!
