Auburn's batters were on fire with the multi-base hits as they tallied 6 doubles on the night against ACC team and long-time Auburn rival Georgia Tech on the way to a 7-4 victory in Atlanta.
Auburn looked to be in control of this one for most of the game. They got the scoring started in the bottom 3rd thanks to a Jonah Todd double. In the 4th, they added two more runs on a Conor Davis RBI single that scored another run thanks to an error. In the 5th, Jay Estes ripped a double that took the score to 5-0 Auburn. Things seemed to be cruising for Auburn at that point.
Georgia Tech came back with a solo shot in the bottom 5th for their first run of the game. Auburn responded with a Will Holland RBI double in the top of the 6th. They added one more in the inning for the 7-1 lead.
Momentum swung a bit in the bottom of the 6th. Tech scored one run there and then picked up a two-run home run in the bottom of the 7th to make it 7-4. Things were starting to look a little interesting and heart-pounding for the Tigers.
The defense came through in the Bottom 8th, but the offense couldn't pick up any more insurance in the Top of the 9th. Daniel Robert singled to left and then stole 2nd, but was picked off in a rundown shortly afterward to end the inning.
To seal the deal, the Tigers brought in ace reliever Cole Lipscomb for the bottom of the 9th with a 3-run lead. Lipscomb did his job well, getting a ground-out to Luke Jarvis, then a pop-out that Jarvis had to adjust a good 10-15 feet on due to the increase in wind in Atlanta. He took care of the final out himself with a strikeout to close the game with a 7-4 victory for the Tigers.
Way Forward
This was a big victory for the Tigers. It was the 8th in a row and it's always good to be on a winning streak. The Yellow Jackets have some very good bats that could have been a huge handle for the Tigers' midweek pitchers. They stood up to the pressure well while Auburn's offense tied the season high for multi-base hits. This was Auburn's first road test of the year, and they didn't look like it phased them at all.
Next up is a trip to Athens, GA for a three-game set. The Bulldogs were swept in their opening SEC series by LSU. It's a winnable series for the Tigers and being the first true road series would be an even bigger morale and confidence boost. First pitch will be at 6:00 pm Central and all games should be available for streaming on WatchESPN.
