After 4* OG Jalil Irvin’s most recent trip to AU where claimed he was “99.9% percent close to committing”, it hasn’t been a question of if but when the big man would announce a verbal commit to the Tigers. Well, it appears Auburn did enough to earn that final .1% as they landed the stud OG today with this Twitter video.
Irvin holds over 20 offers from top schools like Michigan, Ohio State, North Carolina and many others.
Irvin was once a Michigan commit but decided to reopen things when he felt that Michigan wasn’t doing a great job of communicating with him. It became a four-team battle after that between Auburn, North Carolina, Tennessee and the Wolverines. He took 2 visits to the Tigers over the fall and Auburn offered back in October. Irvin plays at Stephenson in Stone Mountain, GA where the Tigers just recently signed 3* S Carlito Gonzalez.
The Tigers now have 4 commits in the 2018 class. Don’t be shocked if another name is added in the coming weeks.
Irvin is a very multiple lineman who could honestly play any of the five OL spots. More than likely though he will end up in the interior at guard or center due to his height. I love the way he comes off the ball. He displays an outstanding first punch and an ability to finish blocks. He’s incredibly physical in the run game and does a great job of keeping his feet moving once engaged with a defender. I think he’s pass protection needs a bit of polish but I really think this kid fits in perfectly into what AU needs from their offensive lineman.
Last year, Herb Hand had the OL class wrapped up by July. Sure the Tigers wanted to add a 4th if possible but the top targets were already on board. Don’t be shocked if something similar happens this season with Irvin being the first piece. I really like this pickup and think he’s a great fit for our scheme. He has already decommitted once so it will be important for Auburn to keep on him but for now, it’s a great early addition to the 2018 class.
War Eagle Jalil!
