Game Preview and Open Thread - Auburn vs Mercer

We need the points.

Auburn plays Mercer today for Homecoming, and while we expect an easy win, there are a few things we’d like to see:

  • Points
  • Defensive shutout
  • Easy win

I stress no sacks. If Mercer’s defensive line gets in and takes down Jarrett Stidham once or twice, It’ll be like Daniel Day-Lewis’ magnum acting opus There Will Be Blood, renamed There Will Be Boos, which we can’t have.

As for the other stuff, we need to see a great revamping of the passing game. Maybe Chip Lindsey’s move to the press box will help, but who knows. It’ll definitely help him see the field more, and maybe Herb Hand’s move down to the field will allow him to get in his offensive line’s grill for a little extra motivation.

On defense, we don’t really need to see anything. I would love a shutout, and I predicted one yesterday, but it’s likely that Mercer gets something on the board, especially late when the backups are in.

But on offense, we need to see Jarrett Stidham go hard. Lots of passing, long passing, something to give the Tiger fans in attendance something to enjoy. I feel like this little kid in the painting below when I watch all the other teams throw long bombs and enjoy a functional passing game.

I said, gimme the passes.

Today’s the classic get-right game. Let’s do it. We’ll win, there’s not a questions in my mind about that, but it’s how we win, and if we actually improve during the course of the game in time for our SEC opener next week on the road.
