Auburn Rises in New Basketball Rankings

We’ve officially got a top ten team, y’all.

NCAA Basketball: Washington at Auburn Julie Bennett-USA TODAY Sports

Auburn sports this season are moving like a see-saw. Football’s up and down on its own, but this weekend in particular, Gus Malzahn’s team went the opposite way of Bruce Pearl’s basketball bunch. While the football team lost at Georgia, hoops dominated a ranked Washington team at Auburn Arena, and it paid off in the rankings that have been released today.

The Tigers moved up ahead of fellow SEC team Kentucky after the Wildcats got blown out by Duke in the Champions Classic on opening night. Meanwhile, other ranking systems are even higher on Auburn.

ESPN has them at #7 in their latest Power Rankings...

Andy Katz on NCAA.com moved Auburn up even higher than that based on the 88-66 win over Washington, who’s going to contend for the PAC-12 title...

And while CBS has the Tigers in the top ten as well, the little blurb about Auburn chooses to focus on the fact that Austin Wiley had just five points in his first game back instead of the final score or complete domination of both games last week.

Either way, Auburn will very, very, very likely be 3-0 when they head to Maui next week. There’s only one game this week (Mississippi College on Wednesday night at 7 PM CST), and then Auburn will head out to the islands to get ready for tipoff against Xavier, which will come Monday at 1:30 PM CST.
