It happens every year. A kid comes to Auburn to camp over the summer and absolutely blows the staff away. It results in an offer and a commitment leaving many fans going “uh who?” That happened for 3* Ja’Varrius Johnson this past summer when he was the camp standout at an event in June, earned an offer and committed on the spot. At the time, no one really knew who he was causing some fans to question why the staff would “settle” so quickly. After a senior year where he caught 87 passes for 1,683 yards and 18 touchdowns, fans are no longer questioning the decision.
Now he’s officially an Auburn Tiger.
Johnson is a big play waiting to happen. Despite being a diminutive 5’9” 165 lbs, Johnson was a terror in Hewitt-Trussville’s offense this past season lighting up some of the best defenses in the state of Alabama. He’s a legit 4.5 speedster who can score at any moment. Johnson can also make a major impact on special teams and that might be how Auburn gets him involved early in his career.
The big concern with Johnson is obviously his size. It’s probably going to be difficult for him to block on the perimeter and you have to worry about sending him over the middle. But the Tigers are going to need to replace Ryan Davis’s production and Johnson sure as heck ain’t a bad place to start.
Alabama never offered the talented playmaker but kept a close eye on him this fall. The Tigers were able to convince the young man to go ahead and sign early which is huge because plenty of suitors were probably heading his way in the upcoming months. Auburn has some big time WR talent already on campus and are adding even more with this 2019 signing class.
War Eagle Ja’Varrius!
