This is a very important victory for Auburn on the recruiting trail. 3* RB DJ Williams went from unknown lowly ranked 2* committed to Appalachian State to one of the most highly sought running back prospects in the southeast. The Tigers were the first to offer Williams and that proved big as he decided today (after one of the longest ceremonies I’ve seen in awhile) to commit to Auburn over Alabama and Georgia.
Williams missed much of his junior year due to injury but once his senior tape came out, his recruitment exploded. Auburn, Alabama, Georgia, Clemson, Michigan and plenty of others all came calling. The Tigers were the first to get in on the race and hosted him for an official visit the weekend of the Liberty game. They had to hold off a late surge from the Dawgs who missed out on Trey Sanders earlier today.
Pretty easy to see why this kid’s recruitment exploded. At 5’11” 210 lbs, Williams is a compact, powerful runner capable of exploding free in the open field for big gains. He played QB for his HS team whose offense was simply snap it to Williams and let him make a play. Auburn’s 2018 leading rusher Boobee Whitlow had the same sort of experience in high school. His running style honestly reminds me some of Mike Dyer. It looks like he’s almost gliding as he navigates his way through traffic and open field for huge plays. He is an outstanding fit for Auburn’s system and gives the Tigers another future bellcow back on the depth chart.
With Asa Martin’s transfer to Miami, Auburn really needed to get at least one back in this class and Williams is a heck of an addition. The Tigers are hopefully not done at this spot either as they pursue 4* Mark-Antony Richards but it’s good to already have someone on board. Unless there’s a major surprise in the afternoon, Auburn is probably done for the day in terms of landing new commitments. For the Tigers, the goal today was to land Hall, Williams and sign the majority of their class. Mission accomplished.
