Hey everybody! I figure since we are really into the time of year where it seems like there are several Auburn athletic events every day, it might be useful to have an early-in-the-week look ahead at everything that is coming. Auburn seems to be soaring in almost every sport under the face of the sun right now, so heading out to any of our teams’ events is likely going to be a good way to spend an afternoon. So, what in the wide world of Auburn sports is going on this week?
Baseball kicked off to a really fun start last weekend, with the team handling Longwood easily and allowing a few of the freshmen to have some big performances. The Tigers have five games this week, starting with Georgia State at 4:00 PM on Tuesday and Troy at 4:00 PM on Wednesday, with both games taking place at Plainsman Park. The weekend sees Bryant University coming to town, with games at 5:00 PM Friday, 1:00 PM Saturday, and noon on Sunday. Hopefully the guys can continue their hot start and pick up some more wins this week!
While the offense may have taken a few games to get going, the ladies came to play last weekend, continuing their undefeated start. Up next, the team takes a road trip for a west coast tournament, taking on CSUN on Wednesday at 4:30 before playing in the Mary Nutter Classic in Cathedral City from Thursday through Saturday. As is, the schedule consists of playing Notre Dame at noon and Wisconsin at 2:30 on Thursday, San Jose State at 2:30 on Friday, and Oregon State at 2:30 and Long Beach State at 9:30 on Saturday. Unfortunately, I don’t think there will be any televised broadcasts, so I won’t be getting any softball-at-work action.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (13-13)
This season hasn’t gone quite as planned for Coach Flo’s squad. They’ll look to end the season on a high note this week, though, as they travel to undefeated Mississippi State for a 7:00 tip Thursday night. It doesn’t seem likely, but a win there would be a huge boost for the program. The Tigers wrap up the regular season in Auburn Arena Saturday at 1:00 against Ole Miss.
Despite their record so far, these girls are good! They pulled off first place in a tournament hosted on February 11th, and are still ranked #16 in the country. It’s a big one this Friday night, as the ladies host #7 Alabama at Auburn Arena at 7:30. If you’ve never been to a meet before, this would be a fantastic night to go support the team.
MEN’S AND WOMEN’S TENNIS (8-3/9-3)
Both the men’s and women’s squads will be competing in the Blue Gray Tournament in Montgomery Friday and Saturday. The guys are off to a decent start and are 8-3 so far this year, but the ladies are 90-3 and ranked #13 in the country!
MEN’S BASKETBALL (23-4)
I don’t think I have to tell anybody here what’s going on with basketball. After a resilient second half effort in Columbia, the men’s team will have to figure out how to play without Anfernee McElmore in their first revenge game of the year. This will be a big one, with Alabama coming to town Wednesday night at 7:30. A win would go a LONG way towards helping capture the regular season SEC title, because Saturday, the guys hit the road again and go to Gainesville for a 7:30 tipoff against the Gators.
Also, Wednesday night’s game is an orange-out!
Per usual, Auburn equestrian is up to #2 in the country again after a defeat of Texas A&M! The ladies will take on #9 South Carolina this Saturday at 11:00 AM in Auburn, so if you’ve already got a day trip planned for baseball or softball, why don’t you swing on by equestrian first!
TRACK AND FIELD
Lastly, the track and field team begins its postseason for indoor track season with the SEC Championships in College Station on Saturday and Sunday. There will be events all weekend, and if you’re interested you should be able to stream through WatchESPN. Good luck Tigers!
I told y’all it’s a busy time of year! Let me know what y’all think, this is the first time I’ve done this so I’d be open to changing the format around.
