Weekend Review - The Bryant Series

AuburnTigers.com

Bryant @ Auburn

  • Friday: 15-7 W
  • Saturday Game 1: 13-4 W
  • Saturday Game 2: 3-1 W

The Tigers put together another great weekend performance, and with it received a well-earned sweep of a game Bryant Bulldogs club this weekend. Sure, on first blush, this is what should have happened, but you have to realize that Bryant is a very tough ball club from Rhode Island. Sure, they haven’t won yet this season but in the NEC, pre-conference games at this time of year might are the first time the team has been outside, the pitchers have been on a real mound since last May or June. This Bryant team will get it together with that lineup. They just ran into a buzz saw of an Auburn pitching staff. That said, Bryant still put runs on the board this weekend, but the Auburn bats worked at the right time to get enough runs across for the series sweep and the first 8-0 start for Auburn since they started 13-0 in 2001.

Pitching Performance of the Weekend

I am going to try not to just give this to either Burns or Mize all season, but Burns is already making that tough. 7 innings of 2 hit baseball with 8 strikeouts? Come on man! So instead I will give this weekend’s performance to the bullpen. Corey Herndon and Peyton Glavine both shined on Friday night, giving up just one hit in their combined 2 innings of work. In the first Saturday game, Elliott Anderson, Cody Grenhill and Ryan Hoerter were good for 3 hits in 5.1 innings of work allowing no runs to secure the series. Then to cap things off, Calvin Coker picked up the win giving up just 2 hits in his 2 innings of work with four strikeouts.

Batting Performance of the Weekend

Conor Davis and Brendan Venter will be 2 names Bryant hopes they never have to see again. In game 1 of the double header, Conor provided the go ahead for good double to center with the bases loaded to break a 4-4 tie in Game 2. In the first 9 innings he went 2 for 3 with 2 BB and 4 RBIs. In game 2, hits were few and far between, until the 8th inning when Venter went off on the 0-1 pitch to take it over the monster. In the second 9 innings of the day, he was 2 for 4 with a run scored but it was a huge run to sweep the series for Auburn.

Around the League

#1 Florida @ Miami, FRI 7-3 W, SAT 8-2 W, SUN 2-0 L

Solid road series win against Miami. The Canes don’t seem to have everything together just yet but that Sunday saver from the sweep is always welcome.

#4 Arkansas @ Tony Gwynn Memorial Classic (San Diego, CA)

  • vs Cal Poly, FRI 4-3 L
  • vs San Diego State SAT 5-2 W
  • vs San Diego SUN 7-6 L

It was a rough weekend for the Hawgs on the West Coast. However, I’m not going to read too much into this one seeing as the other teams had a couple hours bus ride while the Razorbacks probably had to get on more than 1 flight to get out to San Diego.

#8 Kentucky vs Oakland, FRI 10-1 W, SAT 17-6 W, SUN 15-6 W

Kentucky showing that the pitching staff isn’t the only thing they have going for them this season.

#9 Ole Miss vs Tulane, FRI/SAT 5-4 W, SAT 9-1 W, SUN 6-3 W

Another nice series sweep for the Rebs. After the Friday game got suspended for rain, they were able to bounce back and keep the momentum to hang on to a 5-4 win.

#10 Texas A&M vs Cornell, FRI G1 3-2 W, FRI G2 22-0 W, SAT 8-2 W

Ever heard of them? Texas A&M doesn’t care.

#13 Vanderbilt vs UMass Lowell, FRI 15-0 W, SAT 15-2 W, SUN 9-2 W

Commodores just doing Commodore things.

#21 Mississippi State @ Kleberg Bank College Classic (Corpus Christi, TX)

  • vs UC-Santa Barbara, FRI 7-4 W
  • vs Nicholls, SAT 14-4 W
  • vs Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, SUN 6-3 L

Nice week for State as they went 3-1 after the stunning resignation of their head coach earlier in the week. More road games to come but at least the Diamond Dogs have a crooked number in the win column.

#23 LSU vs #19 Texas, FRI 13-4 W, SAT 10-5 W, SUN 11-1 L

Excellent bounce back series win over a much improved Texas ball club. Sunday stung a little but wins of 9 and 5 runs looks nice.

Alabama vs Washington State, FRI G1 12-4 W, FRI G2 8-2, SAT 9-3 W

Don’t look now, but Alabama is also undefeated after taking the Mike Price Series from Washington State.

Tennessee vs UNC-Greensboro, FRI 3-2 W, SAT 11-4 W, SUN 3-2 L

This really needed to be a sweep for the Vols but it HAD to be a series win so a check mark in the column for this one.

South Carolina vs Charleston Southern, FRI 7-0 W, SAT 14-2 W, SUN 4-2 L

Yup, Yup, WOH! Gonna have to go back and see if I can watch the Sunday game on replay…HOW’D THE BUCS DO THAT??

Georgia vs Charlotte, FRI 12-2 W, SAT G1 6-4 W, SAT G2 10-7

The Dawgs are quietly having a solid pre-conference season. Series win over GA Southern, road win over Kennesaw State in the midweek and now a series sweep over Charlotte. Not huge names no, but that’s where Georgia is coming from.

Missouri vs Northeastern (Fort Myers, FL), FRI 5-2 W, SAT G1 10-8 L, SAT G2 20-1 W, SUN 4-2 L

Heads up Auburn fans, the Tigers see this Northeastern team in 2 weeks. That said, Mizzou should have at least taken the series but we knew it would be a rebuilding year for the Tigers to the North.

On Deck

How good is this Auburn baseball team? We will find out Tuesday when they travel to Mobile to take on a nationally ranked South Alabama ball club. The Jags are 7-1 and coming off a 4-0 week with a win of Southern Miss and a sweep of Hartford. This will be Auburn’s biggest test until the Georgia Tech game in a few weeks or the Texas A&M games that following weekend. For the weekend, the Tigers host the BYU Cougars for 3 games in 2 days once again. So far this season the Cougs have gone 5-3 with a series win over Cal State Northridge and a series split with Hawaii.
