Midweek Report - The South Alabama Game

Road Warriors, Assemble!

AuburnTigers.com

Auburn @ #15 South Alabama

Tuesday: 7-6 W

The Tigers got a huge road win in an epic back and forth game, taking down a strong Jaguar team 7-6. Andrew Mitchell started off strong, going 4 complete innings allowing just 3 hits and 2 walks while striking out 6. During that time, the Tiger offense was able to take a 3-0 lead through 4 innings. The Tigers ran into some trouble in the 5th, as the South bats came alive for 4 runs while the Tigers when quiet for the middle part of the contest. That changed in the 8th inning when Jay Estes got hit by a pitch and was able to get to second on a steal. Estes then scored on a Brett Wright single that tied the game. That was followed by a Will Holland bunt single and then a Luke Jarvis 3-run homer to give the Tigers some insurance they would need. The Jags were able to scratch across 2 runs in the bottom half before Cody Greenhill was able to close out the game, going 2 innings and getting the save. This is the first resume building win for Auburn in their first true opportunity and it couldn’t come at a better time. The Tigers are in the middle of their non-conference schedule and this win will play as a huge confidence builder to get the Tigers back to the magic they had early last season.

Around the League

#1 Florida @ North Florida, TUE 4-0 W, WED 8-3 W

Just #1 doing #1 things on the road.

#5 Arkansas vs Dayton, WED 18-1, THU 4PM

Hawgs still have the rare Thursday midweek game before they host Southern Cal this weekend. Interested to see how their 5 games in 5 days run goes.

#7 Kentucky vs Western Kentucky, TUE 4-3 W

Kentucky didn’t score a run until the 9th but pulled out the 4-3 home win.

#9 Ole Miss vs Murray State, TUE 7-6 W

In the midweek you just need to win and gain pitching experience, good win Rebs

#10 Texas A&M

  • vs Houston Baptist, TUE 7-1 W
  • vs Incarnate Word WED 9-7 W

Solid wins over 2 overmatched teams, but solid effort from UIW

#12 Vanderbilt vs Austin Peay, TUE 19-6 W, WED 8-5 W

Nothing to see here

#21 Mississippi State @ McNeese, WED 6-3 L

Not shocking but a solid W for McNeese. State is ready to get home to the New Dude and a friendly crowd.

#22 LSU

  • vs Grambling, TUE 10-3 W
  • @ Southeastern Louisiana, WED 5-4 L

Interesting result last night in Hammond. Sure it’s a midweek game but LSU normally doesn’t drop one to SEL. One to keep an eye on but you don’t want to drop too many midweek games, especially early in the season to an in-state, if you’re LSU.

Tennessee

  • vs Middle Tennessee State, TUE 5-4 W
  • vs Arkansas-Pine Bluff, WED 9-1 W

That’s what we want to see from the Vols. Two solid mid-week wins.

South Carolina vs Furman, TUE 6-4 L

Ouch….ouch….

Georgia vs Wofford, TUE 5-0 W

Georgia’s Wednesday game against GA State was rained out and cancelled so just a good win against Wofford.

Alabama

  • @ Samford, TUE 13-3 W
  • vs Alabama State, WED 11-1 W

Don’t look now but Alabama is 9-0 as well. Solid start for Coach Bo, and a really great start for the entire state in college baseball between Auburn, Alabama, USA and Troy.

Missouri vs Alabama A&M, TUE 7-3 W, WED 14-0 W

Nothing to see here. Missouri putting together some good work during the midweek, now just need to translate that to the weekend.

On Deck

Auburn heads back to the friendly confines for a 3 games in 2 days set with BYU. The Cougs are off to a nice start with a series win over Cal State Northridge and a split of a 4 game set with Hawaii. Drama has not been lacking for them this season either, as 7 of their 8 games this season have been decided by 2 runs or less. Following the quick weekend, Auburn goes back on the road to Regions Park for a neutral site game with UAB on Tuesday before returning home for the final non-conference series of the regular season against Northeastern.
