Mississippi State @ #24 Auburn
- Friday: 2-1 W
- Saturday: 7-2 L
- Sunday: 7-5 W
Auburn did exactly what it had to do this weekend, win a series over a game Mississippi State Bulldogs team. Casey Mize was exactly who we all know him to be, holding the Dogs off the board for the most part except for a blip on the radar in the 6th inning. Mize went complete game giving up 5 hits and 1 run with 9 Ks and zero walks…again. A pitcher with his kind of control is absolutely insane and if Auburn can just get 2 or 3 runs on Friday night, should feel good playing anyone in the country. The Tigers got those 2 on back to back doubles to lead off the 2nd and 3rd innings and that was just enough to hold up for a Game 1 win. Game 2 was more of the trouble that Auburn has faced this season. Davis Daniel went 3 innings giving up 7 hits and 6 runs, all earned, with 5 Ks and 2 walks. Andrew Mitchell was really good in his first relief effort of noticeable length since returning from the injured list, going 5 innings and giving up 4 hits with a run. At that point it was already too late as the Auburn bats could only get two runs on State starter Ethan Small who went 7 innings. The rubber match looked destined for the same ending after state put up 3 runs in the 5th and chased Tanner Burns who had been excellent up to that point, giving up just 2 hits before entering the inning. Cody Greenhill was able to come in for 4.1 innings of long relief and allowed just 2 runs from then on. In the 6th inning though the Auburn bats came alive, highlighted by Brendan Venter’s 3 run bomb off the top of the scoreboard that put Auburn into the lead for good. Auburn ended the inning with 7 runs on the board and that would be enough for the victory. This was a huge series win for Auburn when they had to have it. This upcoming weekend begins the back half of the SEC regular season and the Tigers find themselves just over the line to get to Hoover which is good but scary with series against Florida, Vanderbilt, Ole Miss and LSU still to come. However, you can’t play those series yet, Alabama is next on the list and at least 1 game must be a win, 2 games would help erase the hurt in Fayetteville. Take all 3 and that Missouri series won’t hurt as bad either. It won’t be easy but if this team can just take it one pitch at a time and believe, it has the talent to get the job done.
Pitching Performance of the Weekend
This week it could go to Casey Mize of course, how many times are you gonna go CG and shut down a team like that dude? It is a pleasure to watch you work sir. However I will give it to Cody Greenhill. Cody is quickly becoming my favorite guy out of the pen and we get to watch him develop for the next 2 season as well. The freshman went 4.1 innings, had 5 Ks with no walks, gave up 5 hits and allowed 2 runs that were earned for a guy that just got back last weekend after battling an illness for close to a month. It was a fantastic outing when Auburn had to have a win and the young man got the job done.
Batting Performance of the Weekend
How can you not give it to Brendan Venter? Big 8 has been in a bit of a slump since SEC play started and you can see that he has been hard on himself trying to figure it out after he had a hot start to the season. This swing however, had a lot of frustration release on it..
Touch the all big dog! You earned that one sir!
Around the League (now with Standings!)
Missouri @ #1 Florida , FRI 3-1 FLA, SAT G1 10-2 FLA, SAT G2 7-2 UF
Series sweep from the champs as they continue to roll.
South Carolina @ #4 Arkansas, THU 3-2 USC, SAT G1 2-0 ARK/7, SAT G2 3-0 ARK/7
A bit surprising at that game 1 score and the low numbers from Arkansas on the whole for the weekend but it’s a series win and those are all that matters in the conference.
#5 Ole Miss @ #17 Vanderbilt, FRI 11-3 MISS, SUN G1 8-7 VAN, SUN G2 8-7 VAN
Talk about a huge day in Nashville for the Dores. Getting a DH winner over the #5 team in the country is no small feat no matter where it is. Very nice series win for Vandy and another heartbreaking series loss for the Rebs.
#12 Kentucky @ #18 Georgia, FRI 6-4 UK/11, SAT G1 9-7 UGA, SAT G2 1-0 UK
Gotta admit, I did not pick this one to go to the Cats. Huge road series win for Kentucky as they are in a very nice place to start the back half of SEC play.
Alabama @ #20 Texas A&M, THU 12-6 A&M, FRI 9-6 A&M, SAT 3-2 A&M
Mmmm, love the series sweep here. It does make the tide a bit more dangerous going into next weekend but you can’t pass these up when they come along.
Tennessee @ #21 LSU, FRI 9-3 LSU, SAT 14-5 LSU, SUN 9-7 LSU
Going from salvaging a game at LSU to getting swept in one swing. Tennessee held a lead in the 9th at a 7-6 score until a 3 run bomb erased that and the Tigers walked it off at the box…ouch…
Auburn wraps up the four game home stand with the return trip against UAB before hitting the road to take on the Tide in Tuscaloosa. Auburn already holds a win over the Tide this season with their win at the Auburn In-State Invitational otherwise known as the Capital City Classic. This will be a tough series as it always is against Alabama but it will be good to see coach Bo again as Auburn looks to repay Alabama after last season’s sweep in Auburn.
