Midweek Round-up: vs Samford

AuburnTigers.com

Samford @ #25 Auburn

Tuesday: 7-2 W

The curse of Casey Dunn is over (at least for this season)! Auburn was dominate in a 7-2 win over its former catcher as Jack Owen and Elliott Anderson combined to shut down Samford and more importantly save the Auburn bullpen from being over taxed in a short week before heading to Gainesville tonight. Owen had a banner night, going 5.1 innings of 6 hit, 2 run baseball while striking out 5 and not giving up a walk. Anderson went 3.2 scattering 3 hits and striking out 4 with a walk. It was a fantastic outing for both who needed a bounce back from a couple of rough experiences on the hill earlier this season. At the plate, the bats indeed did travel from Tuscaloosa. Auburn exploded for 5 runs in the 4th and got fence post in the 1st and 5th and went for 10 hits on the evening including a Steven Williams bomb in that big 4th inning. This was a huge confidence building game for the Tigers as they hit what is more than likely the toughest close to any season I can remember. Auburn heads to Gainesville this weekend, host Vanderbilt, travel to Oxford and then close at home with LSU. If Auburn can somehow split those it has to be considered a huge win for Auburn as any wins against those 4 should be celebrated.

Around the League

Mercer @ #1 Florida, TUE 6-4 L

Oh good, Florida will be nice and angry as Auburn comes into town. Here’s hoping they are that way Saturday night too….

#4 Texas Tech @ #7 Arkansas, TUE 5-1 W

That’s the way to bounce back after a WHAT JUST HAPPENED weekend in Starkville!

#6 Ole Miss vs Mississippi State (@Pearl, MS), TUE 7-6 MSU

Gotta love a walk off win against your biggest rival in a neutral site game to make sure some of their fans had to watch too!

Morehead State @ #15 Kentucky, WED 7-1 W

Midweek win…nothing to see here.

Abilene Christian @ #20 Texas A&M, TUE 8-2 W

See above…

#21 Georgia @ Georgia Tech, WED 8-3 W

Georgia is doing just enough to stay in that conversation to host a regional and they are on the right side of it at the moment.

#24 Tennessee Tech @ Tennessee, WED 7-6 L

Tennessee is getting closer to a contending team, next year should be one to watch in Knoxville but for now they are that pesky team that if you don’t show up to the ballpark, they will beat you.

Troy @ Alabama, TUE 4-3 W

Alabama gets back on the right side of the column getting a win after a rough weekend where they GOT BLASTED IN ALL 3 BY AUBURN! (It will never get old)

Missouri State @ Missouri, TUE 8-2 W

Another solid win for Mizzou as they look to lock up a regional bid.

Lamar @ LSU, TUE 8-0 W

Big weekend for the Tigers as they head to Oxford and a win that should have been that dominant to get it started.

South Carolina @ Furman, TUE 10-2 W

Midweek win…nothing to see.

Regional Watch

We have been bestowed with two Regional Projections to take a look at today so let’s get to them!

First up, D1Baseball.com:

LUBBOCK, TX

1. #3 Texas Tech

2. Auburn

3. Dallas Baptist

4. Grand Canyon

EW! Don’t want!! If Texas Tech wasn’t bad enough of a matchup, Dallas Baptist has been one of the hotter teams in the country just itching to have a break through in the NCAA tournament. Pass! Oh, and should Auburn get through this regional they would play the winner of the Athens Regional.

Well, lets take a look Baseball America…maybe that’s better:

Corvallis, OR

1. #6 Oregon State

2. Auburn

3. Nevada

4. Grand Canyon

EW! Well…eh….maybe…ok this one is more work able even with a monster like Oregon State. With the way the season is unfolding for Auburn so far, you would think that Burns then Mize is the correct call for game 1 and 2. Tanner has shown he can go deep and save your bullpen and Casey is Casey and could get you to a clincher weekend and with the way Andrew Mitchell has thrown this season you have to feel like you have a punchers chance against anyone’s 4th starter. I prefer this one as well for selfish reasons…should Auburn get through the Super would be in Nashville and that mean’s I get Auburn baseball around the corner from my backyard!

On Deck (With SEC Weekend Series Schedule)

  • #25 Auburn @ #1 Florida (THU-SAT)
  • LSU @ #6 Ole Miss (THU-SAT)
  • Tennessee @ #21 Georgia (FRI-SUN)
  • South Carolina @ #14 Vanderbilt (FRI-SUN)
  • Missouri @ #15 Kentucky (FRI-SUN)
  • Alabama @ #7 Arkansas (FRI-SUN)
  • #20 Texas A&M @ Mississippi State (FRI-SUN)

There is only 1 top 25 matchup in the conference this weekend and it gets top billing as Auburn heads to take on the Gators. Interestingly enough, Florida will be looking for payback as the Tigers swept the Gators to start conference play last season, however that National Title took the sting out of it I think. Auburn comes into the series hot, winning 6 in a row and 7 of their last 8. Florida on the other hand has lost 2 in a row but did take the series in Lexington last weekend. Elsewhere around the conference, can LSU get off the mat after an unbelievable weekend in Columbia, SC last weekend? State looks to take another top 25 team down at home against A&M and Georgia could really use a sweep against a pesky Tennessee ball club. It should be another interesting weekend again to be sure!
