It happens every year. An unheralded prospect get his chance to show what he’s got in front of Auburn’s coaching staff and blows everyone away. Sammie Coates, Jordyn Peters, Josh Marsh and George Pickens are all recent examples of guys that landed offers after stand out performances at an Auburn camp.
Add 3* WR Ja’Varrius Johnson to the list.
Extremely blessed to say I have receive an offer from Auburn University, and I want to thank coach Gus Malzahn for the opportunity to be an Auburn Tiger! 100% committed to Auburn University, War Eagle pic.twitter.com/xZ5cffG3O7— Ja'Varrius Johnson (@varjohnson1) June 8, 2018
Johnson was one of the top performers today at Auburn’s camp. He reportedly ran a sub 4.5 40 yard dash and couldn’t be stopped in 1v1 matchups. Here’s a quick clip from AuburnSports.com’s Jeffrey Lee showing Johnson matched up against 4* CB Jaydon Hill.
Hewitt-Trussville WR Ja’Varrius Johnson was hard to cover Friday at Auburn’s HS Tiger Camp I. Here he is against Bob Jones CB Jaydon Hill... pic.twitter.com/j6BRAdupvA— Jeffrey Lee (@JLeeAURivals) June 8, 2018
Johnson only held one other major P5 offer before today, one from Mississippi State which he earned at their camp last weekend. He played for St. Clair County High School last year but transferred to one of the top high school football programs in the state in Hewitt-Trussville this offseason. He will have a chance to play with and against some legit D1 talent this season.
Johnson possesses elite speed and quickness. He gets out of his breaks insanely fast and is a dangerous threat after the catch. He’s not the biggest dude in the world at 5’10” 165 lbs but he more than makes up for it with his quick feet and ability to get consistent separation. Johnson looks like a clear candidate to take over Ryan Davis’s role in the offense next season as the quick screen, short yardage guy. I’m excited to see how Johnson performs this year at Hewitt-Trussville.
Johnson gives Auburn nine commits in the class and two at the wide receiver spot. Unless Auburn can get someone like 5* Jadon Haselwood to flip his commitment or convince someone like 4* Jalen Curry or 4* John Dunmore to jump on board, the Tigers are probably done at wide receiver for this cycle. They have their big bodied freak in 4* George Pickens and now they have their lighting quick slot guy in Johnson.
War Eagle Ja’Varrius!
